I am disabled, which leaves me with lots of time and nearly no money. I think this makes any hobby difficult, however, having the free time does help. I recently picked up this lot of 4 estate pipes that need a lot of love. These will be my first learning experience in the refurbishing/rebuilding world. I am very interested in learning if there are any places to pick up some stems at low prices. New or used, doesn't matter to me at the moment. I'd love to learn to make my own stems eventually, but I can't afford the necessary tools for perfect drilling like that.

Good morning. I have seen new stems for sale on Ebay. Don’t know of the quality, but may be a place to start. might be a challenge to match size tho. But I have no experience in this!

www.vermontfreehand.com. high quality Greek molded vulcanite stems of just about any shape. bear in mind that any stem will need quite a bit of carefull sanding to fit the tenon to the pipe mortise, and the stem OD to the shank OD. The first tool you'll want will be a lathe.

I was thinking the same thing about matching sizes. But until I can afford the proper tools to make my own stems, I think I'll attempt to collect as many stems as possible, new and old alike. That way I have a "bone yard" to fish through whenever I need a stem. My income is next-to-nothing ever since becoming disabled so it takes a long time between purchases, which makes things that much better when I finally get them, but makes it that much harder to put together a set of tools and the like.

The middle one wont be as difficult. It looks like a pressure fit type stem. A lot of freehand style stems will work I bet. The top bowl looks like firewood to me. The bottom bowl will be the biggest challenge finding a tenon that fits and then you will need to file and sand the rest. You can get a tenon turning tool thing but they aren't cheap and can be a pain to use. (or so I have heard)

Dang, hit finish before I wanted to. One option on the bottom bowl is to use the current stem and hacksaw the broken end and then file and sand a new button. This will change the true shape of course but will get you smoking quicker. I have no idea what those Bavarian bowls are like.

I have a Bavarian bowl(like the top example) minus stem. I converted it to a desk pipe by utilizing clear tubing with a short saddle stem on one end and a repurposed scoop style stinger for the inlet. I can smoke it either hand held or propped in a folding plastic pipe stand.

Awesome replies, guys! Thanks a lot. I honestly hadn't ever seen this kind of stem before. What'd you call it, a pressure something or other? (I'm on my mobile so I can't see what I'm replying to haha)
I would love to carve a nice long stem for this pipe. I'll have to search the forums for information on what to use. I'm not really familiar with all the materials yet, though I have seen some bamboo for making stems before...those wouldn't need drilling right? I dunno. I'm just looking forward to doing something with these. Even the cracked one. If I can't fix it, I'll repurpose it.

I took the Dremel sander tip to the stem on the cracked pipe, just to see what I could do, and it turned out nice for my first EVER try.
