The hobbyists tend to revere having a Supertaster capability.
A good quarter of the population is quite tolerant to off-tastes, aside from the huge factor of individual preferences. Being a Supertaster, which includes another 25% of folks, isn't necessarily a good thing. I was listening to a talk by the Managing Director of the Monell Chemical Senses Center (the foremost institution on olfactory, smell and taste studies in the world), and he said that he scored exceedingly high in the super-taster category. So much so, in fact, that even with heaps of cream and sugar, he cannot stand the taste of coffee. Can you imagine going through life without being able to enjoy coffee?

That would be tragic. A world without coffee . . . . almost a scenario for a Horror flick. Regarding super tasters, I am on the other end of the scale, forever baffled by the nuances super tasters detect in their tobacco.

I don't drink coffee. I've tried it every so often over the years and still don't get the appeal.

I'm not a superataster but as a musician I have a pretty ear but I have friends with perfect pitch and they nuts when things are even the slightest bit out of tune. That happens on recordings more often than you'd think so it's fun watching them wince when a note is not quite right. You can pick them out at a concert easily enough. Their the one's who slightly rise in their seats to get the offending note to pitch.

Yeah, coffee is much more of a Gulf coast and southern Mexico. In the center of Mexico the traditional hot drink is atole which is corn based...people from Iowa and Nebraska have nothing on me in that regards!

A couple of descriptors of flavors detected I heard somewhere and love:
A wine sommelier "freshly opened tennis balls"
And a cheese affineur "cobwebs"
Now that is some super tasting, got any more?
