Personally, I don't care for them. IMHO, the meerschaum tends to be just a barrier between itself and an inferior briar bowl, just as some of the leather clad bowls provide protection to bad bowls. Often, the liner is cracked.
How do other fellow members feel about these? Agree or disagree, or somewhere in between?

I have 3. A Sav, Jeantet, and Genod. No complaints other than a Meer lined pipe seems to generate more shank crud. They look really sharp when new and I think that accounts for some sales. I noticed that SP Estates likes to promote them as burnout proof. I have also noted over the years that the Dr Grabow Meer Lined manufactured in Italy, are held in good regard.

I bought a new one, Bent Pot, from Tinderbox about thirty years ago. I loved the wide chamber and it smoked to perfection every time. Since then I have two more New/Old TB MLined. One cracked at the bottom of the bowl after a few smokes. The other is fine, but nothing to write home about. If I found a bent pot ML I might try one again, only if the chamber is wide

I don't search them out, but I obtained a Dublin estate pipe where due to a band repair, all that is showing are the words gold, London, England...it smokes very well...very cool, and doesn't gurgle, the drilling is spot on. It won't win any beauty contests, but it does what it is suppose to do.

I bought one back in '79 from the Tinderbox. It's an okay smoker, but not a favorite by any means.

I'm with Peterd . I actually don't care for meers much at all. I have a beautiful one these 35 years, and in only smoke it because I should. It seems to me that meers absorb the flavor and make for a bland smoke. I may be F'up, but that's what i find. Nothing like a good briar. I actually prefer a cob to a meer.

I was gifted a beautiful solid block meerschaum Claw. Tobacco just tastes better in a well seasoned briar or one my my beloved cobs. There is an added richness to the smoke that meerschaums just do not exhibit.

Glad to see that I'm not an oddity (well, about this, anyway), with you distinguished gents also finding similar effects. Love a good briar. Gotta love whoever discovered gruyere as an ideal pipe material. Kinda like the guy that first figured out that truffles were good with beef. Glad briar isn't as expensive as truffles.
