Hi folks. Just registered and am new to smoking pipe tobacco. The quick of it is, i got a pipe for Christmas that came with some aromatic tobacco. I did enjoy it but, after some poking around and minor experimentation, I have found that i really like the McClelland's Frog Morton's Cellar. So, in an effort to understand and appreciate the other options available (I understand after some simple research, that there are thousands of choices :-)), I thought I would just run it by you more experienced smokers to see if anyone may have a "follow up" for me to try given my new favorite, i.e. FMC. Does anyone have a suggestion for my next choice based on my enjoyment of the Frog Morton's Cellar? Quite honestly, the options are overwhelming and I would like to find something else in the same "neighborhood" as the FMC that I am currently enjoying very much. Considerable Thanks for any insight, suggestions and responses!

Nice to see someone going straight to the good stuff! You can't go wrong trying the other Frogs in the series - the original FM (without the whisky flavor), On the Town (with some Basma Oriental leaf), and On the Bayou (with Perique). You also might want to check out blends that have Latakia and Orientals but aren't so sweet; and/or blends that are sweet but with no Latakia. McClelland has lots of great options in all genres, so picking up some 1oz bulk samples of blends that sound good is a great way to go. Also, if you don't know this resource already, check out www.tobaccoreviews.com/ That will help you narrow things down.

Welcome to the group. I would recommend McClelland Legends. I would also try two Dunhill blends: Early Morning Pipe and Nightcap.

Welcome to the forum. If you like the style of FM another to consider is E.Hoffman Distinguished Gentleman. It's hat some of us call a crossover blend; not quite a full English and not quite an aromatic. I would consider the FM series to be in this genre. Not a bad way to start.

Lane: HGL might be in your wheelhouse. Available in bulk and quite reasonably priced.

David, I like Spillman Mixture a lot and then tried Distinguished Gentleman and it struck a note with me. Sometimes old time styles just bit the right buttons.

I like both, but the DG Mixture is retro taste, but not an actual old label. However, the stuff is smooth and velvety. One reviewer said creamy. Yeah, it just reminds me of velvet.

david & papipeguy - How heavy on the Burley is Distinguished Gent? Comparable to HGL or ? I haven't tried HGL. If it didn't say it had burley I would not have thought much either way. The Lat is a tad forward, but is so smooth it is almost its own taste. I have enjoyed this before getting into other Lat blends. Papipeguy had the best description here. In my own way I would describe it as the difference between Bordeaux and Burgundy. This would be a Burgundy. Bordeaux would be a stronger, rougher lat heavy.

Since you have such a limited experience with different types of tobacco’s, I would suggest that you branch out and try other blends. FM might really fit the bill today, but in a week you might find that Burley’s, Virginia’s, Va-pers, va-bur’s etc... really trip your trigger.
There is a possibility that you might buy several blends of a genre, only to find that your tastes have moved on. Attending a pipe club meeting allows you to successfully enjoy several different options, along with crucial advice that allow you to develop the best informed choices for the potential of evolving tastes.
If you would like to know if there is a pipe club in your area, let me know where you live.

Hi, and welcome. I'm new here also. Although I've been smoking pipes for years, I haven't really started developing my tastes for different tobaccos until recently. I have always smoke the "drug store brands"(not that there is anything wrong with that), but there are so many more out there. I enjoy the latakia blends more than anything else, but I am also trying other blends. Right now I'm into burleys and Virginias. Some of the tobaccos I've tried are better than chocolate! G.L. Pease and Daughters & Ryan tobaccos are very good. I especially enjoy the D&R English Hoopla. Enjoy!

There are tons of members listed who fit the description of "ghost". I get it. Most forums or groups probably have similar demographics as far as participation. I have been on another pipe forum longer than this one, and have about 5% as many posts there.

Some people just enjoy the conversation they don’t participate because they don’t have anything to add.

Some people check in here once, doing a drive by, as it were, most often looking for a pipe evaluation value, so they can sell it on eBay.

I was looking for people with experience to read their posts and learn stuff about pipes and tobacco. To say I was not disappointed is an understatement. I am glad I stuck around to get to know the people who make up this little corner of the web.
