So I have been a nearly 100% unflavored tobacco smoker, an occasional top note notwithstanding, since picking up the pipe 4 years ago.
I still really enjoy my VaBurs, VaPers, Lats, VAs, and others. Lately I have been interested in trying some more aromatic blends. Most Aros I have tried have little to no tobacco flavor- Lane 1Q, BCA, RLP, the various Captain White’s, some of the MacBaren 7 seas blends and maybe a few others.
I am looking for really OUTSTANDING Aros with more tobacco strength and flavor under the topping. I have been considering Peterson Founders Choice, Stokkebye 4th Generation Family reserve or something along those lines.
Anyone have any recommendations for a medium to strong tobacco with aromatic flavor and room note?

If they are out there I never smoked them. Most aro's and otc drugstore blends are made from cheap Green River Burley that's had the life cooked out of it, soaked in chemical flavoring and humectants to avoid tasting like natural tobacco.

G&H has some stronger offerings in their bulk selections.

I wouldn't put aros in general in the same category as OTCs. McClelland makes some fine ones, as does Boswell, though I wouldn't call them subtle. I second the GH suggestion, and some from SG, too (though Firedance Flake is pretty intense - great, but heavily topped). Maybe Mac Baren Vanilla Creme Flake? It is very vanilla-y, but the VA tobacco still comes through loud and clear. Then there are latakia-aros, which is a whole different ballgame....

Thanks for input so far. Not looking for lat Aros. I have a few of those. GH isn’t bad but their tobaccos tend towards a “muddy” flavor to me which seems weird with an aro topping. Forgot about MB vanilla creme. I like that one. Looking for more like this style.

You might try Peter Heinrichs Reserve Crue No. 2. Good Virginia flake with some citrus overtones.

Kind of sums it up for me. I have plenty of Aro's on hand, I smoke them from time to time....kind of like drinking a Budweiser, reminds me why I like craft ales. When I joined the Pipe Tobacco of the month club, I got plenty of Russ O's mixtures that I am sure have their followings, but candy cane cocoa tasted like burnt chocolate to me, and a wintergreen/mint blend left a taste that lasted for three days...that one was good for smoking cessation though. I have never tried any of them, I will like to hear what you have to say.

I smoked Captain Black (white) and Barclay Rum (Barclay Rex) almost exclusively for my first 10 years with the pipe. I then smoked only Latakia/Balkan/Orientals until last summer. Today I smoke mostly VA, VAPERs and VA/BUR. For some reason last week I wanted to try Peretti Coffee blend. I ordered an ounce and smoked my first bowl this past Thursday. I was pleasantly surprised. It was smooth, flavourful but not overly so. It was not harsh, nor chemicalish. The nicotine level was mild. It's a blend I can puff mindlessly while reading a book. This won't be an everyday blend, but it's something I could reach for when desired.

Just thought of another, though it's HTF - Esoterica Blackpool. Just a light licorice topping.

Both the PH Cru are good and #4 is nowhere as sweet as the description sounds. I had overlooked them and they are a good recommendation. I don't see any commonality with Erinmore and in contrast, OGS, is quite plain.

If you want tobacco taste in your aromatic, I'd try adding either a burley or virginia to whatever you smoke. You can mix it 50/50 or whatever you like to get the tobacco taste you want & still have the aromatic room note.

The very best are by Wilke. You and your partner Jim of INKS fame convinced me. My next tobacco purchase will be from Wilke. I look at it, but have a tough time choosing. Side note: Gatlinburlier has more of the yellow rubber pouches I love a few dollars cheaper than Cup o Joes. I have about six now, but I want a rollup of all the tobaccos in my regular rotation. I can keep them all on my desk.

1) Ditto on the previous mentions of Peter Heinrich's Reserve Crue #2 and #4. Excellent Virginia Flake with a flavoring that is more in the background and lasts through the bowl. Plus, the flavoring does not seem to fade with age. However, these may not fit your medium to strong criteria.
2) Have you tried Arrowhead Pipe Club Mixture from Paul's Pipe Shop yet? Very good vanilla aro, medium nic hit, good tobacco taste, ages fantastically.
3) Make your one. Get some C&D Green River Vanilla (or similar, I prefer GRV) and mix with a favorite strong tobacco. My personal favorite is something that I call Pegasus River. It is 2 parts Pegasus mixed with 1 part Green River Vanilla.
4) A semi-aro like Chatham Manor or Prince Andrew.

You can always try mixing Kentucky Club and Russ' Yule Log. It's super flavorful, just don't expect anyone to appreciate the room note!

Have you tried any of the flavored twists from g &h? The flavor doesnt make it to the bottom of the bowl but it packs a nice punch and the tobacco flavor is ever present.

The very best are by Wilke. Any specific recommendations? #191 is my favorite and their most popular. It's hard to say what anyone else would like, but all their blends are excellent. The English blends like #10 and #400 are very good. Pipemakers Choice is my second favorite of their aros. All of these blends taste like fine tobacco first, then the topping. Check out the reviews on Tobaccoreviews.com.

Try this, 2 oz of C/D cube cut burley. Place in mixing bowl and add 1/2 dram of loranns butternut/vanilla flavored oil. Mix well .. jar it up and when ready to smoke let dry a few min.. outstanding light blend, good tobacco and not an overpowering aromatic..
