Signed up for a Audible account last year and have really enjoyed sitting in the yard with a pipe and listening to some of the thousands of great books available. Some might say it's "cheating" to sit with your eyes closed and "listening" instead of actually turning a page but it's turning out to be a very good way of absorbing many books I might not have otherwise picked up.
Any other listeners of books on the Briarpatch?

It's been awhile but I picked up a few the last time I traveled across the country and was glad to have them. They really make the miles fly by!

Any other listeners of books on the Briarpatch? I used to think it was cheating as well until I realized how a talented narrator adds so much "color" to a story. I guess it goes hand in hand with my love of Old Time Radio which I listen to on Internet radios and phone apps.

I have been a big fan of audio books for a long time. I use to drive 80 miles each way to work and would listen to them then. When traveling by plane they are awesome also. I used to belong to the book club at my local library and they would get the audio book for me. Sometimes I felt I got more out of a story than the others. If it’s a good narrator, that gives each character more of a personality. When listening to a series, I found it unsettling if a new book used a different narrator! This can be the case if the same book is put out by several different companies. An example is the late author Sue Grafton. Who did the alphabet series M is for murder etc. And suddenly the main character has a different voice.
Important safety tip. Don’t get lost in the story while your driving. Yes ive missed a few turns. And something like the Story of Nascar may not be a good idea😄

If you attend a pipe show, make sure you look up Rick, he is a really nice guy, very personable. The nice think about the audiobooks, is that he has updated content in the way of back and forth conversations with his son. I don't have any of the paper books, but I need to add them to my library at some point.

Suggestions: Robert Van Gulik - Judge Dee mysteries. Ones read by Frank Mueller (RIP) are great Amy Tan - Hundred Secret Senses - for your wife or your flowerdy moments Sidney Kirpatrick - Cast of Killers - True story of William Desmon Taylor read by Richard Widmark. If you can find it. Mine is lost to the ages Mickey Spillane - Everything. I think some are read by Stacy Keach
Back in the mid nineties I took a trip to Chicago. On the way back, in a comfy Ford 150, I put on Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, abridged. It was a four hour tape, and after 4 hours of driving in the snow turned to rain, I just pulled off the highway near home. Ended the tape. The Radio came on playing Lakeshore Drive (the beautiful strip I had spent days on). It was 4Am or so and it was the perfect drive, mood, etc. It's one of those "If Only I Could Recapture" moments
Oh, I would be remiss if not mentioning one of my fave authors: Peter Straub
Ghost Story Blue Rose Trilogy: Koko, Mystery, The Throat Hellfire Club Shadowland Floating Dragon

23 year over the road driver. Teamed with my wife the last 10. Hated them when she listened to them at 1st. Then she got J.D. Robbs Death Series an I was hooked.

Audible is too pricey for me, but I've been a big fan of books on tape/CD since I was a kid(I'm almost 37 now). I recently picked up a tape that I had in the early 90s of three great short stories by Lawrence Block called "Like a bug on a windshield" and "How would you like it". Both very good.

I listen to audio books when I work. I got a lot of them from the local library, and copied them so I won't be pressed to hear them all before the due date. Archive.org has tons of free public domain books for download. The only negative is the narrators work for free, and some are bad. If you like Mark Twain, only get the ones by John Greenman. He's good; some of the others are terrible.

I currently have 543 titles on Audible. Total hours listening 3 months, 13 days, 17 hours and 43 minutes. Most of this was commuting to work and sitting under a tree in my truck while eating lunch. As for as cheating, I have read thousands of paper books and any one who has read more than 7000 is welcome to cast stones. I am reading more on the Kindle now than I am listening, also working on 4 paper books since I retired and don't seem to have a lot of time to put on the headphones and block out my wife. We always listen to the audio books on vacation road trips. I need to pick one for a trip to Corpus Christi later this week. Main highlight will be the Alsatian Bakery in Castroville.

This darn Arizona weather! Had to get up against a wall to hide from the wind this afternoon! blowing my pipe cleaners off the table and cooling the coffee off to fast! Listening to the book "News Of The World" Guess I shouldn't be complaining.
