Everyone has at least one pipe that makes one scratch their head and wonder how such an abomination got into their collection. So, now is the time to let your ugliest pipe shine with the first The Briar Patch First Annual Ugly Pipe Contest. Since I am a moderator here I am disqualifying myself from the competition. However, here is my ugly pipe and it is the undisputed winner of several of these contests, so I'm retiring it from active competition. This is a Harcroft made by Preban Holm for Dunhill, who owned Harcout in an attempt to garner some traction in the freehand pipe market in the 1970's. It was a Christmas present from my brother sometime around 1974 or 1975. I thought I would show you just how low the bar is for this type of event. The staff at The Briar Patch will determine the "winner" and the prize is the 2017 POY set from Missouri Meerschaum. The contest will close on February 14 (Valentine's Day seemed appropriate). So let's see your ugly pipes and show them proudly.

That truly is hideous. It looks like someone made it out of one of those "carve your own briar kits." Blindfolded.

Organic. I like it myself. That mimicking the burl onto the stem shoulder is clever. May be conventionally ugly, but wouldn't be surprised if it smokes well as a house pipe.

My ugly submission. 394 grams, 19 inches long...fully functional, but I doubt I will ever smoke it. Try to clench it, your upper teeth will probably mirror his.

I think this is the ugliest pipe I have. Mind you it was made that way on purpose by Olie Sylvester, it's one from his Monstrosity Zombie series, titled "Bloody Knuckles", and is made from meerschaum. A nice wee pipe for strong baccy! Well, if it was mase ugly on purpose, the maker certainly succeeed!

Got this in a lot of pipes on Ebay. Looks like a Willard stem and perhaps a Kaywoodie bowl.

While I do understand why it's considered "ugly", I just love it.

John, your pipe almost looks as though the 'artist' were inspired by fractal cubes, but just kind of lost direction and fizzled out. haha

Harcourt Brace and Jovanovich used to print textbooks...I remember delivering to them back in the day, I remember that for the most part the staff that I saw looked like Manson family members...the dregs of society and they were writing textbooks? That might be a Timothy Leary inspired piece of briar, John.

Bump. Come on, folks. I just know that someone else has to have a pipe that is so hideous it hurts to look at it. Let's see it.

My pipe is not part of the competition for that very reason. I posted it as an example only, although it is pretty outrageous.
