I guess Stalin was worse, but... If you are of the younger set, you might not have heard of the medical procedure called frontal lobotomy. Dr. Walter Freeman started doing the procedure in the 1940's in order to curb behavioral issues with patients. It is a Pretty Frankenstinian procedure, and watching the procedure is not for the squeamish at heart. The Kennedy family had the procedure done on Rosemary, and that story in itself is bad enough, but thousands of patients later, it was discontinued...a lot of ruined lives in the process. The full PBS documentary: The procedure as produced by Dr. Freeman.. Graphic

Netflix has a series called "Lore" in which this was presented ... truly horrific! It's hard to believe the sheer volume of people this was done to and, oftentimes, for next to no reason at all.

At the time, lobotomy was considered therapeutic for certain mental disorders. It did have a calming effect on violent patients in mental institutions. That procedure has been superseded by drug therapies. Electroshock was another "winner".

Dr. Freeman began his procedures with a good jolt to the temporal lobes ... then reached for the ice pick.

I guess that is where the saying "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy" came from. I can whole heartedly agree!

The good old days. Now when kids misbehave they just get adderrall. Yeah.. the story says that the production of Thorazine signaled the end of F/L’s and was marketed as lobotomy in a bottle.

I find the whole procedure to be barbaric and reminiscent of Nazi experimentation.
