I've heard a lot of members suggest using Carter Hall to break in a pipe.

I'm a bit of a noob with only a year of smoking under my belt, but I have found that the dozen or so briars I own have just kind of broke themselves in. So long as you have a decent technique for packing and you do not use a torch lighter, I think the tobacco and wood just naturally work it out for you.

Generally I do not smoke "wet" aromatic tobaccos when breaking in a new pipe. A Burley, English or Straight Virginia that leaves a nice dry white ash is my preference. Then shake up the ashes with my thumb over the bowl and dump the dottle. Helps to promote cake. Repeat & enjoy. This is just what I do though no hard and fast rules apply.

When I started I was worried about this as well. Now almost 3 years later here’s my process. 1. New pipe 2. Tobacco (any, but if I have an idea what I would like to smoke in said new pipe, say a Va, I use that) 3. Fill big hole with baccy....normal full bowl 4. Apply Flame 5. Smoke 6. Repeat
Now some pipes (a few not all) will tell me what they prefer to be smoked in them down the road and I change. With 30 Briars, only a handful are dedicated to a specific type of blend.(another topic all together)
Yes a lot of debate on this. If you want to be safe use a fairly neutral baccy, Carter Hall/Chatham Manor etc Only thing I can advise, don’t over think it. Concentrate on the following
1. Baccy is correct dryness 2. Packing, not too tight, not too loose 3. Cadence
To me pipe smoking should be relaxing and enjoyable. Good luck and more importantly, what new pipe are you breaking in?

Well I usually execute the overthink beforehand/underthink during process. It's a Vaeun Deluxe 368 estate I wouldn't bet used more than once. Generic looking but seems like it will be a good starter. Think I'll look for some Carter Hall before my Nightcap comes in. Full non-packed bowl on the first few???

I fill the bowl full. But that’s me, others do 1/4, 1/2 etc. mainly to get a good heel Cake started. I don’t worry much about it, Cake will form no matter what IMO. I’m sure others will chime in with their reasonings as well. Enjoy the journey!

...you can break-in a pipe using any tobacco you wish...no matter how much you fill the bowl; get a good even burn going, moderate puffing, and don't scrape the interior for a bit...

I do the half bowl thing until the heel is burned in and stick with straight Burley or Va leaf which won't ghost once I decide which way to take the pipe after break in. JMHO

When I break in a new pipe I just fill it and smoke it. I personally like my pipes clean so I don't bother building a cake.

Moisten the inside of the bowl with brandy, then load the pipe fully with any tobacco. Smoke it gently. Over time, it will do just fine.

One thing that will speed up the break in, is to mix a little rum with honey and let it dry before smoking. A couple of times doing this will get you going in half the time.
