Thanks to crapgame for finding me out there and pointing me this way. I’ve been away from pipes for a long time and work pretty much took me away from all Hobbies for awhile. I’m glad to be back and glad to hear that some of you guys managed to keep the band together after I stepped back from Stokers Haven. Looking forward to getting acquainted and reacquainted with everyone.
Since the last time I was at Stokers Haven... I have moved to the lovel part of Virginia (foothills of the Blue Ridge...about half an hour south of Roanoke) and can see the Blue Ridge make my horizon from the kitchen window. I am in the process of converting hay fields into orchards for my own use now and when I eventually retire. And I am an Extra class amateur (ham) radio operator (W4SB).
Puff on!

Welcome to the Briar Patch Bryant, and hope you enjoy your stay with us Those are nice looking pictures of the place, and I'm already jealous What type of orchard are you planning once you've prepped the field?

Welcome to the Briar Patch Bryant, and hope you enjoy your stay with us Those are nice looking pictures of the place, and I'm already jealous What type of orchard are you planning once you've prepped the field? Thanks! I’m gradually putting low swales in on contour and back filling the trench side with wood chips to break down and build good soil. Also, to slow the water running down the primarily clay soiled slope. The back orchard is going to be a mixture of different trees. Currently I have Asian pears, two kinds of plums, three kinds of apples, two kinds of peaches, four varieties of jujubes, mulberries, and hazelnuts. Pawpaws and some persimmons are planted in a patch up closer to the house. Future plans include a chestnut grove, walnuts, pecans, persimmons, and seaberry. The fig orchard is going into the northwest field this spring as that is the best combination of light and protection from the prevailing winter winds.

Sounds like you're getting it all well under control then. Besides the wood chips, at some point in time will you be using cover crops such as winter rye or clover to grow and turn back into the soil for organic matter? Love pecans though. Good luck with your land!

Good luck with your land! Actually, rather than cover crops, I’m planting tons of beans and other nitrogen banking plants along the swales for consumption and wildlife. Plan is to no-till once the initial swales are built. Keep things balanced in guilds so that the land pretty much just takes care of itself.
