Can't vote. I use both. Matches for initial light, lighter thereafter.

Zippo pipe lighter or a plain old Bic, never ever a cigar torch.

Matches almost exclusively. Bic lighter if I am outside and it is windy.

Indoors: mostly paper matches, at back room desk, OldBoy. Outside: Zippo with pipe insert.

I like Zippos, but a BiC is fine. I use matches sometimes, just for fun and I like the smell.

I use both, but voted lighter because I tend to use one more than matches.

Matches: 60%
Zippo: 40%
PS: I'd use a BIC too, if they made a side firing lighter.

I normally just hold the pipe about half way between me and a mirror. Any closer and the briar burns too. Reminds me,I need to get another mirror, mine is scorched.

I use a butane lighter most of the time but do occasionally use wooden matches.

Loss of muscles in my hands makes gripping matches difficult. I just yesterday gave away a $ 25.00 box of Davidoff matches I got in Vegas, to a guy at the cigar/pipe shop.

I use a 9" angle grinder on steel plate and light it off the rooster tail of sparks. Nothing like latakia and metal fumes to ghost a pipe and burn a tongue. At least you didnt mention the liquid metal beads those things burn through a pipe quick. I use a butane lighter 99% of the time the other 1% is a zippo.

I prefer matches, but we need a still day for that. So I bring both.

I prefer the angled flame I get from using my pipe lighters. I get much better control and don't scorch the rims of my pipes. I have a Zippo with pipe insert for outside windy conditions.

I've used a lighter with pipes and cigarettes & I only use matches for lighting candles when we have a power outage. I keep a supply of those large kitchen matches for those candles. I also keep flashlights handy. A friend of mine recently got me one of those Duraflame "Insta-match" multi-purpose lighters. I've not used it for anything but the ones I've seen are miniature blowtorches, IMHO!
