Some of us can remember Jack Paar...
Mine are Johnny Carson, Dick Cavett and David Letterman.
Lots to choose from... Hugh Hefner, Joan Rivers, Arsenio Hall, Jay Leno, Craig Ferguson, Steve Allen, Craig Kilborn, Joey Bishop, Tom Snyder, Gary Shandling, Bob Wilkins, Jon Stewart...

Mine is Johnny as well. I have a bunch of his shows, but so many more I miss. Leno would be my next one. The biggest crime the ones after Johnny committed was not having a sidekick. Leno was a nice guy and never went beyond Johnny's line of decency. Had he a sidekick and his guests stay around longer, it would have had that feeling that Carson could give. George Goebel, Bob Hope, Dean Martin, and Ed McMahon all on the couch and chair at the same time.
These new shows are too political and proud of their ignorance of their audience. They come out and say conservatives aren't smart enough to host a show. Compared to gregg Guttfeld (whose sidekick is Tyrus) Kimmel and Colbert are nothing. Conan O'Brien is the best of the current ones

Steve Allen, the original. Very talented man -(yes, talent... that's no longer required, today) could play piano, interview, tell a joke, keep his mouth shut and actually listen, do comedy, and have guests that were equally talented and relevant. Jack Paar, Carson, Merv Griffin, and a few others, also had great shows. I know, I'm a geezer.
Now, today's late-night hosts/preachers/propagandists, like Letterman, Kimmel, Leno, Conan, Colbert, Stewart, and the rest of that crew...way too political. I wouldn't lose any sleep by staying up to watch these sophists. Before I close my eyes I don't like being mocked, preached to, insulted, screamed at, and be told that I'm really nothing more than a ignorant, POS... because I don't think like they do. They don't entertain, they use their shows to attack, marginalize, and ridicule. Not for me!
I'll pass.

He was tops, sort of a milder Ernie Kovaks. Oh, and I did watch a lot of Joey Bishop.

I have the complete Playboy After Dark. That was an amazing show. I only have a couple of his fifties version of the show and can't believe that was never issued. It's dated and sometimes seems forced, but the look and the feel was all Hef and the Era

Steve Allan was before my time, but watching the old clips, he was one of the greats.
After that, Johnny Carson was the Gold Standard.
Leno did a really good job oftaking political jabs at both sides, and had a line he didn’t cross.
After him though, some of them tried to act like they took swipes at both sides, but on one side it was a feather duster joke, at the other side it was a kick to the crotch.
The current crop I really have no use for, rarely funny and the audiences tend to act like trained sea lions barking on command.

Johnny, hands down. I don't watch any of the newer guys at all. I spend my nights in the Briar Patch chatroom.

I too loved Johnny,Liked Leno, and had high hopes for Fallon.Unfortunatly Fallon's antics are too juvenial for me.And Kimmell,I'm supposed to take him seriously after he co-hosted that crappy "The Man Show"?And Colbert is nothing more than a political quack. So my late nights are on PBS watching BBC's "The Last Of The Summer Wine".

Johnny Carson was the best that I have ever seen. In my lifetime nobody compares. I liked Letterman a lot too. Of course he was seen as too silly and juvenile when he first appeared on the scene too.
Unlike the rest of you Codgers, I like Jimmy Fallon quite a bit. He is every bit as talented as those of the past. His biggest flaw is that he is not in the same class as an interviewer, but it can be argued that times have changed and that is not important.

All of these hosts should do what I said. Have a sidekick like Conan has. Ask guests to hang with the show for the course. Fallon is very talented. Not to wax political, and though I don't like Colbert preaching, I get a kick out of Gregg Gutfield. His main sidekick is Tyrus, a wrestler. All of his guests are there for the full hour and all are engaged. One other thing. Carson, who was the King, sort of started the decline of late night. Anyone recall his 1.5 hour shows? Less commercials and it was like spending your evening with him. I didn't watch him as much after he switched to an hour show. Signed, Damned Proud Codger Pedestrian

My favorite is/was Dr Bill Wattenburg on RADIO. For years he was a fixture on KGO out of SF, California, but they changed formats.

Favorite radio host not entertaining us anymore is Art Bell, former host of Late Night show Coast to Coast.
Most of our beloved local radio hosts went in the can when iHeartRadio took over WHAS. Too bad that one.

Art Bell tried to go to another show, I forgot what and how. He was great. I never got to listen to him as much as I liked. That was the perfect drive around the streets of Saint Louis at 2AM show

My favorite Cavett moment was when he was interviewing Janis Joplin after she had pulled a groin muscle in a show:
I know all the hip expressions, you see. Your engine is revved up.
You're a real swinger, I can tell by your shoes, man!
Wait a minute, Janis, Janis. These were good enough for my grand-father, they're good enough for me.
I had a lot of trouble, last week I, er, it wasn't that tune, we opened with another tune and I tore a muscle.
I heard about this. You tore a mussel somewhere near Maryland. Er ...
It was closer to home than that!
Well, er ...
