In the late 80s I will admit to watching Morton Downey JR. He was a conservative hack, but was hilarious.

I miss; Johnnie Carson Steve Allen Jay Leno And Tom Snyder. In that order. I can't stand any of the current ones, except Conan in small doses. Anybody see Eastwood on Kimmel? Right after Kimmel said all conservatives were stupid? Awkward. The new guys have no class. Which is about right for the world we live in. Jack Parr was opinionated and confrontational, but he had more class in his little finger than all the new crew put together. And he had Patsy Cline as a regular guest.

Time for one of the mods to lock this one up before it gets ugly.

Too young for Carson. For me it was Leno. I was just old enough to rememeber his first show on the job. Later, my grandfather owned a hotel and I worked there for a summer as a kid and part of my pay was receiving a couple old TVs when he updated the rooms, so I was one of the few kids my age who had a TV in his room. I went to bed watching Leno from an early age and the trend continued throughout most of my life. When he retired it was a bit of a shock. Maybe the first time I felt old. The fact that Letterman was also gone.. Conan is the only guy from 'the day' still swinging. I hate all the new late night hosts. I feel disenfranchised when I watch them.

Johnny Carson.
I remember his interview with Arnold Schwarzenegger and asking him what got him into body building. Arnold replied that one day he got out of the bath and while drying off in front of mirror. "I thought the rest of me should look as good as the best of me". Got me hooked on Arnold with that interview also.

Yikes!!!! Dick Cavett was briefly, a guest-host in Janis Joplin's home? Please, I'm trying to eat breakfast sausages, and you ruined my appetite!
I can't picture the refined Mr. Cavett going anywhere near a beat-up, shack.

Favorite radio host not entertaining us anymore is Art Bell, former host of Late Night show Coast to Coast. Most of our beloved local radio hosts went in the can when iHeartRadio took over WHAS. Too bad that one. Art Bell was/is the best for sure. I am listening to re-runs of his show right now.

That said, I was at a Craig Kilborn taping with YES as a guest in 1997, and he was the most miserable person in the world. I mean miserable. He would "act the part" while taping, but in between taping, he was miserable. You could see it in his face and body language.
That said, I liked Johnny Carson. He was great, IMO.
Second would be Conan O'Brien. IMO, he should have kept The Tonight Show.

Her parents had a clean little frame house in Port Arthur, and she lived in SF rental homes and hotels. I gotta say, it's Yankees like you that look down on everyone and everything Southern that makes us wish that the whole gol-danged lot of you would freeze in the dark.

Wasn't Art Bell the guy on the radio with the conspiracy theories and call-in abducties, and white supremacists?

My favorite Cavett moment was when he was interviewing Janis Joplin after she had pulled a groin muscle in a show: I know all the hip expressions, you see. Your engine is revved up. You're a real swinger, I can tell by your shoes, man! Wait a minute, Janis, Janis. These were good enough for my grand-father, they're good enough for me. I had a lot of trouble, last week I, er, it wasn't that tune, we opened with another tune and I tore a muscle. I heard about this. You tore a mussel somewhere near Maryland. Er ... It was closer to home than that! Well, er ... ...word is he had a brief affair with her... In actual fact they were good friends. People, especially Cavett, weren't that judgemental back then.

Now I'm more confused than ever. The southern conservative defending the druggie hippie San Franciscan feminist against the elite New Yorker? Where have all the stereotypes gone?! (Note: if it's not obvious, this is meant to be all in good fun, and not to stir political sh*t).

Morton Downey Jr and Geraldo, back in the day, did more to bring stuff to the forefront than anyone. Geraldo gave us the Zapruder Film and was the first to put out the closest theory to the JFK killing. Downey was the first to start calling out Shadow Government activities. Conan is a madcap genius in the spirit of Steve Allen and Ernie Kovaks. Agree with headrott about the Tonight Show. I am not fond of Leno as a comedian, but I have all of his episodes of Leno's Garage. That is where he excels

If you look deeply at Janis, you can see her pain, and definitely hear it in her music. So she self-medicated. Plenty of us do that, especially the more creative types. The Face of Mama Cass at Monterey says it all. Also, for those of you who don't know, Houston is considered the most tolerant city in the country. I have Muslim, black, Vietnamese, legal and illegal Mexican, Canadian and even Californian friends. Most people get along here. I support the Constitution and I have pledged my allegiance to it. Remember that the Texas revolution started because a dictator overturned the Constitution of 1824. And we're ready to do it again. But hopefully won't come to that. The name Texas comes from the Caddo Indian word Tejas meaning friends.

unlike most of today's celebrities, when Carson was done, he was done and didn't look back. I always respected him for that, in addition to his talent.

Tom Snyder Story (Imagine his hehe laugh and gravely voice): I tried to quit smoking many times (this is from memory, so as close as I can get it). I even went to a hypnotist who made me believe that every puff I would take would taste like horsesh***. (pause for puff on cig) You know, after a while I got to liking the flavor

My mind went to radio: Dr. Demento as a kid. I saw Dr. Demento in SF..late 80's or early 90's at the Improv...had us rolling in our seats.
