My Grandfather's War Horse Plug in his Peterson 210 knocked me on my arse.

Captain Black in a Grabow. Both bought at the local drug store. Both tossed after a week of burning hell. The year was 1981.

It sounds like most of us did not have a great first experience smoking a pipe. I'm curious, what convinced you to give it a second chance?

It sounds like most of us did not have a great first experience smoking a pipe. I'm curious, what convinced you to give it a second chance? That seems to be common. For me, it was the desire to master something that my Uncle and Grandfather both did as easily as breathing that made me try again. My first experience I was way too young to ever hope to do that. Picking it back up in my early 20's gave me the benefit of a bit more patience, and the resources of the internet and my local B&M. That went a long way toward making sure that I didn't abandon it again.

What brought me back was my mom threatening to throw-out my uncle's pipes years after he died. I'd cleaned out his house after his death and his daughters let me and my cousin keep whatever we wanted and I brought home his pipe collection. So between throwing them out or taking up smoking, I picked the pipe. I was also curious to try Syrian latakia given the state of the region.

So between throwing them out or taking up smoking, I picked the pipe. I was also curious to try Syrian latakia given the state of the region. Similar story with me. When I moved back to the US, my dad's pipe rack and 8 or 10 pipes were still gathering dust in my Mom's garage. There's no way I'd get rid of them, and it seemed silly to leave them in the garage or just have them around as decoration. So I threw some Nightcap and EMP into my cart in a cigar order, and the rest is history. I'm much geekier about it than my dad was, though. He was a 1-blend guy, and I like to experiment. Come to think of it, the same thing happened with my dad's old humidor lying around. What use is an empty humidor? You just have to fill it up. I was already an occasional cigar smoker, but being back in the US meant limited access to the (real) Cohibas and Montecristos I smoked in Europe. So of course I had to sample many cigars from Nicaragua, DR, and Honduras. But pipes have taken the lead, and I only smoke a few cigars a year nowadays.

Paladin (cherry drugstore aromatic cavendish) in a half-bent Dr. Grabow egg that was similar to one Grandpa had. Wasn’t a roaring success first time out...and I later discovered I prefer English and Balkan blends...but it was a start.

My first tobacco experiences are all codger, but I can't swear which first. I am sure I was cruising with my older brother driving. Middleton Cherry, Mix 79, Flying Dutchman, Amphora, Bond Street. I didn't like any of them regularly. I landed on Tinderbox Captain Spice, Lamplighter, Philosopher, Mango Tango, Peach Melba, and Wilshire. When I was running out I tried Captain Black Original. Though I never thought it as good as Captain Spice I did smoke it about as often. Oh, Old Granddad Whiskey early on, too

I first smoked a pipe in the late 60s and I believe the pipe tobacco I was smoking then was Borkum Riff but I also around that time got introduced to Balkan Sobranie! But please realize that was somewhere around 47 or nearly 50 years ago!

Vanilla cavendish that my dad gave me from a B&M located in the Bergen Mall in Paramus Nj. I think he paid $2 for 4 ounces of it. 25 years ago.

What is it? Lone star or Tin star? Not sure which one, cheap bulk bag I bought with a fake pipe. Was not pleasant.

I don't remember the exact blend but I do know it was one of the Ashtons that my buddy sold in his store, back in 1997.
