Hello,
Bertrand Russell once said that pipe smoking saved his life. Just like Russell, there have been many intellectuals that smoked a pipe in their day (e.g. Einstein, Lewis, Tolkien, Twain, etc.). Do you think, as Einstein did, that pipe smoking "contributes to a somewhat calm and objective judgement in all human affairs”? Do you smoke a pipe? Why?
Thanks

Yes, I smoke a pipe. I do it for many reasons:
The Smoking Experience - the whole of many aspects associated with smoking a pipe - choosing the tobacco, packing the bowl, lighting it, puffing on it, handling the pipe, etc.
The Taste Sensations - The taste and smell of each tobacco as it is being smoked.
Fascination with Variety - There is a great diversity of pipes and tobaccos to be enjoyed.
The Beauty of Pipe Materials - the grain of briars, the milky softness of meerschaum, the utility of the cob, etc.
The Excitement of the Hunt - the fun of looking for estate pipes, rare tobaccos, great deals on retail pipes and tobaccos, etc.

Amazingly that very question has been rattling around in my head for over a week now. I grew up in the sixties and seventies, the youngest of four with a widowed mother. I didn't have a male role model until around 74-75,and he gave up smoking just to get a date with my mom. (And yes he quit altogether, never picked up a cigarette again)My buds talked me into starting cigarettes around 76.But the "pipe".I saw Bing on tv and Fred MacMurray. My Step-Grandfather had a mate that smoked a pipe, and even being "Old" he was one of the coolest ol-boys I ever had the fun of hanging with.So the "Pipe" has always represented fun, classy, smart guys.People I wanted to emulate.

On a more serious note, I got into the hobby after I took a career change and a few friends were pipe Smokers. I always loved the smell of smoke in general, esp pipe smoke, so I gave it a go.
I'm not sure pipe smoking gives me any enhanced clarity of thought, but it does help me to unwind, slow down, and take in what I'm doing. Every now and then I appreciate the change of pace. Perhaps, as a result, it makes me more contemplative and I can gather my thoughts better, but I don't think that would be the case if I was an all-day smoker.
So maybe it's not the pipe smoking per se, but the forcing of oneself to change pace that allows the mind to work unhindered.

Guys, this was phishy and it turned out our Mr. Follmers was a spammer, opening several threads and peddling block chain websites in his posts. He waited though, over a month after this first post.
So, inn the future, anytime something looks weird like this, please report it. I would prefer we address it immediately and not let him sit here as a member and mind data from our site for over a month. We are all a bit busy and rely on our community to help point out weird stuff.
As they say... If you see something, say something.
