Wolftooth's debut album. Also, I have been into Sisters of Mercy lately. I don't know what is funnier- How much I like Sisters of Mercy or the fact that it took me 35 years to find that out.

Jimmy Reed on a Saturday night. I love the short understated harp in this song.

George Harrison - All Things Must Pass - Awaiting on You All That album should go in the "Best bar none" thread. I never get sick of it, and I've been hearing it since early childhood.

Awaiting on You All has some sort of Sound Wall a la Specter. I wish it had some better sound separation, but still my fave on that album. Harrison did a song in the Eighties called Got My Mind Set on You that sounds so Beatle-ish it still brings me back to those childhood days. And, at 3 LPs, it was a tour de force at the time.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Spector produce 'All things must pass'? 'Got my mind set on you' reminds me of the movie 'Look who's talking'. What a weird concept for a movie, a romantic comedy from a baby's point of view!?

As I was looking it up I found out he did indeed produce it. I had no clue who Phil was, but I had and have been entranced by Ronnie for over forty years. In fact, I have her recent works and they are great. This song, a Ramones number by Ronnie, is really cool.

Fair point. In later years, George wasn't happy with Spector's over-production of that album. I keep wondering if his son will some day release a stripped-down version.

I was thinking the same thing, but not sure how much I would want it stripped. I want to be able to crank it up and hear the separation, but I want the instruments and harmony intact. I generally prefer studio versions to live, though live albums have improved quality over the years. One, in fact, had me fooled. My first Kitaro album was live and I didn't know it until two decades later. Imagine being in an audience and being unnoticeable.

@chico yeah, especially after McCartney got 'Let it be...Naked' released. It bugs me a bit that they went out of their way to hire Spector and then act surprised that he dolled up the production. What did they expect? I wonder if they were just struck by punk proving that being raw could be so powerful?

I am a fan of the Sound Wall for certain songs, but in the case of GH - Awaiting on You All (and others) it actually hides the instruments into a giant bzzzzzz sound. Like OJ doing time for a lesser crime, Spector is doing time for a lesser one, too. He should have been jailed in the Seventies.
I wonder how much they could strip that sound down or if the tracks are permanently blended.

I guess they loved that old Spector stuff so much, but failed to see that his style didn't really complement their music very well. Let It Be is a great album and everything, but I wonder how much better it could have been with George Martin at the helm.

"All Things Must Pass" might be my favorite release of all time. I clearly recall my excitement at bringing it home when it was released.

ATMP was an exciting release, but compared to the Monkees and the Archies? C'mon.

Glyn Johns was a great producer, but dropped the ball on that one... and I'm sure "The Lads" were a pain-in-the-arse to work with at that point.

The Beatles and Beach Boys worked with some of the earliest 4-track and 8-track technology as they were obsessed with overdubs. Surely everything individual channel recordings exist and if not they must have reels upon reels of original recordings to choose from.

I have an uncle who's obsessed with the Beatles that says the same thing but I disagree. From what I understand the band was so disfunctional that it took someone as strong willed as Spector just to get the album finished and polished. I don't think Martin's counsel was working at that stage in the band's breakdown.

Frank Sinatra, "In the Wee Small Hours" Amazing thing about The Chairman is that he could have anything he wanted yet he sang for the Lonely as much as anybody. Your mention is great. I like his S Sings for the Lonely and Point of No Return. No one understood 3AM better than he.
