... what pipe has provided the best bargain for you regarding quality and performance? Mine is a 1938 straight black grain relief Dunhill OX Shell bulldog with a silver band repair with a black vulcanite stem. I paid $50 for it in 2002.
As an honorable mention, I also bought a straight smooth Dr. Grabow pot for a $1.99 in 1979. Once I sanded off the wax coating, it became a decent smoker and has been my outdoor work and play pipe since then. Even though I have many pipes that smoke better, I must have smoked it thousands of times by now.

Stanwell bent pot for 38.75 and almost an equal is the poker/cherryood Sloop John B Magnum. I think I paid 25.00 for it. It smokes like a cob in that I can't screw up a bowl It's comfortable to hold and very sturdy. I have two, one being a gift, but I am pressing Sloop John B to make a few more for me. Mind you, the subject is Paid For.

Super easy question ... Cobs. There simply are no pipes at that price level that come close. YMMV

My Don Warren Danish freehand, I bought $10 worth of Vegas Pipe Show raffle tickets, and walked out with a great smoker, and a beauty to boot!

I probably should have tossed unfinished Savs in the kitty too. My unfinished Lumbermen are great smokers and real stayers.

My 2 best for value are an old Jarl i bought in a USMC PX 40 odd years for i think 10 bucks, and a no name Italian oom paul that i paid about the same for. A couple of mine own makes are terrific, so if we discount the labor they were the best value at 11 bucks for the block and 3 bucks for ebonite.

I love good birdseye on a pipe and for years would look at the Collection Occhio Di Pernice line of pipes that Castello made. They retail around 630.00 and there was no way I was paying that much for a new one. One day I saw an Occhio for sale on ebay and in my favorite shape the Dublin. I threw in my high bid and forgot about it. I won the auction for 179.00 plus 5 bucks for shipping. The pipe smokes great and I got my Occhio for a hell of a lot less than 630.00. I still keep my eye out for other Occhio's but so far no where near the deal I got. I got it from this seller, mwreschke (4178) Here are the lousy pics the guy used to sell it. I think it had a lot do to with the price I got. They don't do the pipe justice at all.

I have 2 Savs and they don't make the cut. They are good. Perhaps with time they will be better. It's a question of bang for the buck.

With hindsight on my side, I sure remember some smoking deals at the PX back in the day...You don't see the name Jarl often, but the pipes put out by him are what trips my trigger. Where was the PX located that you scored your briar at?

As most of you know, the vast majority of my smokers are estates that I've refurbed. The two that I am most proud of are also ones that were in very poor condition when I got em. The first is a Savanelli Yacht that was chipped and had a terrible finish on it. I picked it up as part of a "lot" and have about $5 in it. I don't have any before pictures, but here's the afters... My other favorite refurbed smoker is the 62 Dunhill Bent Bulldog. It was pretty grunged up before I got it... But after some elbow grease and some TLC, it turned out pretty nice... They are both great smokers and put a smile on my face every time I take em down off the shelf and stoke em up.

A Few years ago , bought about a dozen more as estates. They all smoke great. My only complaint is most of them are small-ish. That's a nice one you have there

That is from Pipedia... being smallish is what I like about that style of pipe, typical of a lot of the old English pipes. Seems to work well with me for flakes.

My best "bang for the bucks" pipe is a Yorkshire half bent billiard. The only thing I know about the pipe is that it used to be sold by Sears and Roebuck in their catalog. I picked it up in an antique shop for $5. The draw is wide open and is a nice size for an hour or so smoke.

I had to stop and think about this one for a bit as I have several great smoking pipes that I didn't pay much for and a few that I've won in pipe smoking contests. I'm going with the T.Cristiano Signature grade C bent Bulldog with silver band that I won with $20 worth of raffle tickets. The picture doesn't show scale; this is a big pipe with a 1.75" deep bowl. List price for this pipe 15 years ago was $250.

A 2016 Stefano Santambrogio. A week after I bought it for $89, I won the first of two long smoke competitions with it. Two $495 Rinaldo's won with a $89 pipe isn't bad.
