I confess, there is a thrill when looking at or bidding on a Dunhill. The history. The name. The envy.
Of the English-made pipes though, Comoy's and GBD are the true gen.

One British name many do not know is Willmer. I have a collection of their AAA Straight Grains and the wood they used is among the best I have ever smoked. My Pre Transition Barlings are also made from great wood. The 2 Dunhills I own are both LB Billiards and to my eye there isn't a prettier Billiard that has ever been made. I really love the classic shapes and say what you want about Dunhill, they have that down.

Estate Barling's and Estate Dunhills fetch prices that are out of my comfort range, the GBD's that I have scored are in my comfort zone, and all that I have purchased have been as appealing to the eye as they are to the palate.

My Willmers are all over the place shape wise. They took a page out of the Charatan free hand playbook with many of their offerings. If you are patient, you can usually get a good deal on them, especially compared to the more well known British names.

GBD and BBB are my favorite two English brands. Dunhill, Charatan and Upshall are desireable, but always just a little to much money for me. I had a Willmer, but lost it. It was a great little billiard. I look at Barlings a lot, but have yet to pull the trigger on one.

No thrill for me unless it's a steal. I can buy premium pipes for premium prices any time.

I agree, but only because almost almost all my pipes are Comoy's (my dad smoked them almost exclusively, barring one Sav Milano), and I have no Dunhills or Barlings.

let's not forget the ubiquitous Made In England/Made In London, England no names, that often smoke as well as their 'legitimate' kin.

this thread could expand a long time when Bewlay, Civic, Sunrise etc. etc. get added. Bottom line is that the English make a fine pipe.

I was smoking Standard Mixture Mellow almost exclusively last week and I got to thinking, 'Dunhill tobacco smokes really well in a Dunhill pipe'. It may sound obvious but has anyone else noticed this with either Dunhill or another tobacco/pipe brand? Do you think they rigourously test each pipe system with their own tobacco mixture for smokability? Am I just deluding myself with regards to quality control?

zambini, if you find that your Dunhill tobacco smokes best in your Dunhill pipes then it is true and not just your imagination. I have found that certain blends smoke best in certain shapes and sizes of pipes and I am sure there are people who would disagree with me. When you find these magical pairings just be glad you have and don't worry about what other people think.
