I'm not even sure this makes a good thread. I also don't want to name names, as I mention them in public, private, or both when I receive a gift. if it is a tobacco I don't get to right away, I give its provenance in the WAYS thread. What I am curious about is what others feel?
When I smoke a pipe or tobacco that is a gift my thoughts go immediately to the person who gifted me. It's like I carry them in my heart along with other treasures, like present and past pets or stories my dad told me. My heart always gets touched at those moments.
Am I being overly sentimental?

No, not overly sentimental. I have been gifted or traded many tobaccos in my life on a few forums and I can't remember them all. But, I was gifted a pipe and a "Snake" tamper a couple of years ago and I remember those individuals quite well and think of them every time I use them which is quite often.

Not at all! I always think about the person that gifted any pipe or tobacco while enjoying it. Also, it's good to hear that you feel this way as my package I promised is finally ready to ship to you!

I agree, I (almost) always remember where a sample came from, and always think how cool and generous it was for the person to send it. Even if it was a trade, I'm glad for the sharing.

Since I've never been gifted anything within the pipe community my 2 cents worth is really just that - worthless.
However, in the case of other random gifts that I have received, what makes it special is not be the gift per se, but the fact that someone has taken time to consider me and ponder over something they think I might like, and consequently think that it would be worth their while sending me the gift. That is what adds the 'sentiment'... So are you being overly sentimental, not at al (IMO). I think it's good that you feel what you feel.
We have very few cases of people doing random acts of unmerited kindness that an event like this adds some kind of extra layer of 'special' to the gift - it makes a corn cob feel like a briar!

While I've always enjoyed with great appreciation the getting, I get great gratification when giving.

David, I think that appreciating a gift and at least acknowledging that to the giver is a gift back to them. It's also good manners. So., keep doing what you're doing.

Being in Ireland I can imagine there are not as many that could make up a community. Briar Patch has few around me, but the postal rates remain the same. But you are feeling what I feel. I have a tendency to be sentimental. I sleep with the pillows my two dogs passed over on and the heart pillow Xuan gave me. If one rolls off the bed I reach for it calling it by name. But still, as mentioned about giving, that is a part of the overall friendship of this community as well. And, as soapy as this sounds, I am happy we have friends here from Ireland, Mexico, Africa, South Africa, and Greece. We probably have more, but that's all I've kept track of so far.

A couple of Canadians went walkabout too and a regular German poster has been absent too long. International members add to and improve the mix of experience and opinion.

I've never seen such generosity in other communities.

Many of the Euro members are closer to the source of some of the brands of pipes and tobacco we love. So, yes, it is wonderful. Not to mention GUINESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My three favorite pipes are the Doctor Grabow Savoy my wife picked out for, A Randy Wiley short Rhodesian, and a Dunhill canted dublin both gifted to me by a Brother on another forum named Pugsley. These three will stay with me until I quit breathing.A few years back at a time of great distress,Haebar mentioned me to some Brothers and Sisters on that same forum. They hit me with so many samples, cigars, and accesories, I cried for over a month.I'm still working on the generousity from them and my son tries to help anytime he's over. I don't think your being over sentimental at all,I sat down in the middle of my front yard for half an hour holding and staring at that Dunhill.Still take a few minutes each time I load it to say a Prayer of thanks for such GOOD MEN as Pugsley (Warren) and Haebar (Tab).

You're getting deeper into the territory I suspected. It can become quite spiritual. Whether people realize it or not, they may be experiencing the same thing, and I just don't know what it is about a pipe. I could guess.

As I sit a fill my pipe,I think on the ones who cut the burle, the ones who carved the pipe, I inhale the tin note and reflect on the farmers and workers who grow and cure the leaves I wonder at the abilities of those that blend the different tobaccos I study my pipe and remember just when it became mine and how As I reach for my lighter I anticipate the aroma and flavor And with that first pull full of pleasure and comfort I Thank God for those people and for the Honor of such a delightful method of relaxation. The joy of sharing this and the warmth of a "Gifted Pipe" make the experience truly Transendental.

Well said! I am also changing the way we buy our food. When I see hunters literally hunting for food to survive, they all pay homage to the animal that gave them nourishment. I know I can't do this 100%, maybe not even 50, but I want to try to get food closer to the source. I also feel like tobacco is a gift from the land and our Creator. I think the reason the legendary Peace Pipe is called that, as it is hard to be mad over something so enjoyable

saying thank you for a gift is a gift in itself That's profound! On the subject of sentimentality...I'm off this week, and planning to go away for the weekend with my wife and another couple. I've been looking forward to this for ages, and therefore to mark the occasion I've purchased a new pipe (MM Mark Twain). Now, every time I smoke this pipe it will remind me about this weekend. Things like that work for me. When I got married, I used a new aftershave and when my kids were born I played the same (new) song over and over as drove to and from the hospital (a different one for each child). Now every time I wear that aftershave or hear one of those songs, a whole wave of memories come flooding back. It's awesome. I think you can safely say that it HAS made a good thread.
