Having been a pipe-smoker for 45 years, I know how to do it. Second-nature, at this point.
However, when I took up the pipe, I think I was far more concerned about "doing it properly"... focusing more on the mechanics of the act than what I believe now I should have been paying more attention to: the tobacco.
Whether one can smoke a pipe perfectly down to ash, leaving no moisture or dottle, is subject to several factors, not always under the control of the smoker.
Wish someone had told me way back when.
Just a thought... the musings of an old fart, FWIW.

Pipe smoking is prone to more over thinking than just about any other endeavor I can think of.

10% pipe/90% tobacco. Thinning the herd significantly these days.

Pipe smoking is prone to more over thinking than any just about any other endeavor I can think of. That is so true, until you get a rythum. Have you ever found yourself reading a book, watching a show,or just lost in the clouds trying to smoke a cold pipe?

I have 3 simple rules: load it, light it, love it. It's worked for me for nearly 48 years.

Find the type of blends you like then do what works for you..Experience and a bunch of money taught me that.

I have 3 simple rules: load it, light it, love it. It's worked for me for nearly 48 years. Same here... got no special load technique... pick a pipe for long or short smoke... lite it n forget it. Just had an hour long EGR smoke in a tall Patriot cob with no relights whatsoever... quite relaxing after a long workday.
