Is there any blend you feel that has been smoked at least once by 90% of piper over the last 10 years? 75%? From the 'What Are You Smoking' thread I'm guessing possibly Carter Hall or Frog Morten Cellar.

Captain Black White Lane: 1-Q I read somewhere that Captain Black is the most sold brand in the US. Any information on its market penetration?

I am guessing if you added all sorts of countries they are not available it may not make 50%. I think CH probably has been the top tried at one time, maybe replaced by CB Original. When I used to observe dad and his friends it was either SWR, Carter Hall, Half and Half. Prince Albert seemed to be more for the RYO crowd at the time. If we go by the online pipe groups I would give CH a 90%. Guess I am trying to say my sight on this is tinted from what I see here

From what I can perceive on forums and TR, a lot of pipers eventually try a classic OTC burley. I think the most common gateway tobac is a vanilla enhanced aromatic.

I'm familiar with most of the tobaccos already mentioned here but if you filter in the tobaccos which are no longer available then you have a different picture. When I first started smoking a pipe in the 60s my two favorites were Balkan Sobranie and Flying Dutchman. Both of those fine tobaccos are forever gone but I sincerely wish that somehow Sobranie was resurrected since that would make me one happy camper! I've not smoked a pipe in about 15 years and had my first one yesterday now at the ripe old age of 72. I went with to me a known tobacco I once smoked: Borkum Riff original. I certainly will investigate those still remaining old tobaccos which I've long ago smoked. Perhaps they will bring back fond memories!

Sobranie or Flying Dutchman but I know that Pipes & Cigars makes match blends of both. It'd be interesting to hear your take on the similarities between the originals and the match blends.

A litt.e cheaper but outstanding is Byzantium from C&D.

The Sutliff Match blend of Flying Dutchman is better than the original. I would say that it is 2X better. One of their most successful Match blends and they've done a great job in this area, imo.

Carter Hall, SWR are good bets. I'd add Captain Black to the list. I know a few pipesmokers who have only ever had CB. I tell them about the world they're missing, but then consider my TAD and then I envy them for swinging by Rite Aid once a week for a pouch of CB. Haha

Also, based on the shear number of reviews, I think many people have had Night Cap. Everytime I see a new pipesmoker in forums, they remark on it. It was one of my first tin purchased. The art is so perfectly charming, it pretty much put itself in my hand.

In the UK it's probably condor, with St Bruno coming behind... But condor is definitely the winner.
