Anyone that's been here on TBP knows that I'm a pretty avid reader and therefore tend to wax poetically when I post. I say that to share this... What I'm about to share is not yet another over-hyped everyday event, but truly a remarkably kind and truly generous act. Less than a year ago my youngest son Nick and I attended the TAPS (Triangle Area Pipe Smokers) show in Raleigh. I had been befriended by Jim Inks, earlier that year, and was invited to attend and meet some great folks that shared common interests. It was at the TAPS show that we got to meet Jinks in person and several other folks as well. One of those very special folks was MGTarheel, or Mike. Mike was very genuine and quite engaging. Someone with whom you immediately feel comfortable talking with, almost as if we'd known each other our whole lives. Over the months that passed we would exchange PM's and phone calls. Mike showed sincere interest in my refurbing activites and entrusted me with the honor of doing so with a couple of his prized possessions.... A couple of beautiful Edwards estates. Over this time we would talk about different pipes and tobacco and Mike would send me various samples of tobaccos as gifts. I experienced my first ever taste of RDF, Stonehaven, Maple Cavendish and other fine blends. Mike and I have bought tobacco together, swapped various blends with one another, but in the end I am the one that has been the overwhelming benefactor of another persons incredible generosity. Mike has given me a really great freehand olive-wood poker, matching Edwards Billiards for Nick and I, Tampers & who knows what else. Today I received yet another care package from my true friend... Despite the lenghty post thus far, I'm at a loss for words. So, as I sit here typing, and enjoying some of the Rum Cake in my Olive wood poker.... Here's to you Mike. A true friend.

Mike was very genuine and quite engaging. Someone with whom you immediately feel comfortable talking with, almost as if we'd known each other our whole lives.I think that is one of those unique things about the pipe smoking community (even cigar smoking community). I was a member of two cigar boards since the late 90's, and had virtually participated with the members for a number of years. Prior to joining these boards (as I've done here and at the "other" pipe forum), I've lurked as a guest for quite a good number of months, reading threads and getting to know the virtual personalities of the members, and how those members communicate with one another (maybe bust each others chops) and so forth. These members, like the members at TBP, reside in many areas of our Country and outside of the USA. It was probably 8 or 9 years before I finally attended a herf with some of these members in San Diego, CA, and, it was like I'd known these fine people all of my life. I think if the virtual communication has been easy going, then the interpersonal face-to-face locks and bonds the relationship. Since, I have attended a number of large 4 day events in California over the years, and the same thing occurs. Its simply meeting those person(s) with a hand shake and smile, and its all downhill from there... My three cents

I've found that generally pipe smokers are among some of the best kinds of people when it comes to friendliness and generosity.
