Hypothetically, if your son told you he was going to introduce you to his fiance and all you knew was that she was the screen persona of a golden age hollywood starlet, who would you hope she'd be? I'm going with post-1934 Norma Shearer. She was very classy, warm, and articulate; all things one would enjoy when visiting them.

I would agree there, also Myrna Lot. But my favorite would be Capucine from the 60's 70's. The epitome of a Mittel Europa beauty with style.

In the case of Capucine, I don't remember ever seeing her smile although she was always impeccably dressed. Oh yes, she smiled in the pink panther movies, and often in an interview I saw once with her and David Given at their home . It was that slight overbite she had that made me lust when she smiled.

She'd be breaking out in song and dance at every opportunity plus with those long legs you'd have to move out of her way rather quickly!

Mae West.....wouldn't have to watch my language, she'd enjoy a good joke, smoke, vamp, and take care of herself, any way, any time, any how. At the very least, Sunday dinners would be very interesting.
But, Maureen O'Hara would really steal my heart as a daughter-in-law.

The problem I see here is life would be tough if you're lusting after your daughter in law. Too many cold showers.

staying within the parameters of classic cinema, I would suggest Joan Blondell . . . . . Sassy with a Sense of Humor is a nice combo.

Teresa Wright, to my mind, came off rather high-strung. I don't know if my hypothetical son could handle that type of woman. Anna May was rather enigmatic. I don't feel she became comfortable with herself (having read interviews) until the last parts of her career, when she was already dealing with liver disease. In her exotic days she exuded Art Deco Dreams. I tried to get an interview with her brother in the mid nineties. Was told he never gave them. He finally did to someone who, though Chinese-American, was totally clueless about her career. White privilege did me no good back then. Theresa Wright played Lou Gehrig's wife, as a totally supportive person, full of life. Was happy to see her get a role in a fave movie late in her career, Somewhere in Time

A fine daughter-in-law with grace, elegance, and intellectually tops would be Diana Rigg. A bit later than the others mentioned, but in the mold. Would probably be great fun to be around. Probably the last actress I've liked. Today's are mush brained.

If we weren't talking about the 'Golden Age of Hollywood', I would choose either Marissa Tomei or Catherine Bell, who played Major Sarah MacKenzie in te TV series JAG.
