There was plenty of coverage about the FDA rules when it thudded into view in early 2916. Pipe tobaccos are collateral damage in a move by Big Tobacco to fund the passage of legislation that gives them a virtual monopoly on the vaping market, one that they seem to be increasingly intent on developing. Ultimately it will free them from dependence on real tobacco production, which continues to diminish with the loss of Governmental intrusion in the form price supports and subsidies. The costs of deeming are pocket change to BT. We have a one party government now, and they have done zilch to change the situation. Nothing is likely to be done beyond possibly moving the predicate date up to 8/8/16, and even that seems to be dead. And this still had zip to do with McClelland going tits up. The NcNeils decided it was time to retire. May they live long and happily. I whole heartedly agree that the loss of production is the real story and the move away from subsidized production is of huge concern. I was checking some data on income from production in Turkey on a different thread and even for their living standards tobacco isn't a long term life plan for the younger generation. Outside of much poorer places like Zimbabwe, unsubsidized tobacco growth doesn't look like it has too much of an economic future. The fact that many people overlook is that vaping uses tobacco oils that require much less tobacco than alternative methods making it less of a concern for the shift the giants of the industry envision.

I think eventually we are going to see a huge black market when it comes to tobacco. Right now organized crime is shipping 18 wheelers full of cigarettes from the low tax states to the high tax ones. The ATF is spending millions trying to stop them. Talk about a waste of money.

I'll miss the tobaccos that I like when I run out of them.
I wish Mike & Mary all the happiness for their future & enjoy retirement!

I understand people paying taxes and such, and this is connected vaguely. Several years ago the damned Revenuers caught up with Popcorn Sutton, a 72 YO Moonshiner. He was sentenced to jail and decided to kill himself rather than be in jail at 72. All for F-----ing Moonshine! Tell me my tax dollars were well spent on that one

The feds went easy on him multiple times over 30+ years until they could no longer justify the house arrest and probation sentences.

It as the best of times, it was the worst of times.,.
For the time present, the shelves look empty and the panic appears to have subsided.
Take heart McClelland fans. There are more tins of McClelland brands in existence in the wild now than ever before. It’ll be around for a long time yet to come for those who know where to look.
As usual, I suspect everything will be fine when the dust settles. It’s not like pipe tobacco has disappeared from the planet. It’s all part of a natural cycle. There are still plenty of great blenders out there and a few more nobody has heard of yet who want the work and will occupy the space left in the vacuum.
No worries folks - The hobby lives on.

If anyone wants to work for it, there are plenty of small mom and pops out there with full shelves of MC product willing to sell you everything they have. Blenders like R. Will of Solani, Kohlhase, Kopp und Co. KG, Samuel Gawith, Mac Baren are all making fantastic blends. My cellar consists of around 40 different flakes and plugs and only one is a McClelland and I am a happy camper with what I have to smoke. If anyone wants my list of flakes and plugs let me know and I will post it.

Cap, here is my list of flakes that I cellar. When there is a TR next to a name that means for me the tobacco is ready to smoke out of the tin with no additional drying time. I prefer my flakes on the moist side. I find if a flake dries out too much it will burn hot. I would rather err on the side of moist than dry. Two of my favorites have been discontinued so if you find any you might want to jump on them. They are Rotary Navy Cut and Brigham Klondike Gold.

10furlongs, I will gladly accept the raise, thanks very much.
I started that list back in 2012 and have added to it over the years. The most recent additions are the Butera, Curly Block and Salty Dogs.

I'm always amazed how difficult it is for some of you to avoid politics... and you know who you are Granted, FDA related debate is certainly relevant to the hobby, but when it gets partisan and one sided, it really annoys the piss out of me. If a few of you could learn to leave liberal or conservative out of the paragraph or even hint at a leaning, it would probably still be accurate, likely not piss anyone off, and certainly would prevent me from getting agita. My two cents for the day.

it only takes one drunk uncle to bring politics to the dinner table and ruin a perfectly good family get together (If that actually ever existed).

From what undertand it really was about the Ketchup! Hienz had changed the recipe and would not produce anymore of the old stuff so McC's just had shut down! We all know it was the Ketchup that made their blends!

I opened my one jar of 5100 Red Cake last night for a friend to smell. He said it smelled like dill pickle. I had to agree. I wish I had more of it.

They never really smelled or tasted like ketchup to me. A smell of vinegar in various strengths depending on the blend, yes. But it did not translate to smoke, and I'd prefer a natural preservative like vinegar over something like PG. But sugar/booze is even better.

Anyone who's spent any length of time in a darkroom recognizes that scent. Acetic acid. The ketchup smell didn't translate to the taste of the tobacco, and if you want to be rid of it, just open a tin a week or two before you're going to smoke it and leave the plastic lid off for a minute or s every day during that two weeks.
