The last batch of Red Flue Cured Virginia I received is really, really good ... already smoke-able "as is". So, I pulled out a pound and made some tight "pretzel-twists" which were then pushed firmly together into a mason jar: These, along with some that I shredded, will go into a kiln for about 6 weeks. That's where the Magic happens!

Darin Please excuse my ignorance but if the tobacco has already been flue-cured, what will the kiln do to it?

zambini ... Yellowing the leaf converts starches to sugars, Flue-Curing uses heat to stop this process and "lock-in" the sugars. It also is what provides the nice orange / red color indicating completion of the process. At that point, aging is necessary to smooth it out and develop the more rich flavors we'd want from it. A kiln is simply a way to speed up this process. That's the simplified version, anyway.

Maybe McClelland should hire you to solve their Red VA problem!

What temperature is the kiln set at for the process?
Looks great, btw...

For this part it will be approximately 120F and 70% humidity. The same set-up will be used to yellow and dry my own home-grown (with any luck!) and the temps change:

I looked at the first picture and my only thought was "bowels in or bowels out?"
