Are you actually offended by Dave using an emoji? If so, you have amused me greatly.

...they're not actually gone yet, eh? They will still sell to the rest of us.

This is sad news but many of us had plenty of time and the resources to stock up when word of the closing went out. I feel for the guys who had no idea they were smoking McClelland bulk tobacco in their "hand blended" mixtures they enjoyed from pipe and cigar shops across the country. Nice; however, you can put that little condescending emoji after all your posts here where the sun doesn't shine.Β ππππ€£πππ

Technically true, and no official date has been given.Β We change the date in the thread title if they last until next year.Β Β And hey,Β maybe they'll see all the love and change their minds! ...I run as an optimist... Keep running, maybe you will run out of time.

No need to attack the man. I definitely respect you @10furlongs, but cut the man a break; Or did I miss something? Perhaps I did.

That's just plain unfriendly, Mark. While I greatly respect your opinion Don, I don't believe so in this particular instance. Iβm in agreement with don. I donβt see anything condescending about picking an emoji to use as a signature.

Are you actually offended by Dave using an emoji? If so, you have amused me greatly. Hardly offended, that's a big jump Don. Just saying there are as many people here who know as much, if not more than Dave, about pipes and tobacco that the insinuation by the emoji he's somehow educating us with his every post is deeply flawed.

Guys... I know it's a full moon an all, but the prevalence of ridiculous posts the last few days has me spending more time scanning threads than doing my day job.
Everyone take a deep breath, fire up a bowl -- and if the time of day is appropriate in your particular location -- pour a few fingers of your favorite libation and relax.
Enough with the petty jabbing and poking.

The question everyone is overlooking is how much McClelland's Pipestud has been able to buy in the past two days and stashed away to sell in 5 or 10 years for a huge profit? Just kidding pipestud!

I made a weak stab at stocking up on my favorite two McClelland blends when the word first came out, but have noticed that there isn't much of their product left out there at the moment. Lots of Frog Morton and very little else in stock at my favorite sellers. I was able to put away a couple of cans of Dark Star and half a dozen of Beacon Extra. I think a lot of us who have stocked up cellars may one day, in the distant future sell our excess tins at a huge profit. Or burden our families with it when we are gone.

I will miss Dark Star, Beacon Extra and 3 Oaks. All are excellent and among my favorites. I can recommend Peretti's Scottish Flake as a "replacement" for Dark Star. It is the exact same leaf that McClelland used (but is cured with red wine, and the red wine is not over the top if you are worried). I am not going to say they are identical, but very similar, and still available? Edit: I just checked the Peretti site, and it is sold out. If they have it available again, BUY SOME. That is good to hear. I have been wanting to try Peretti's Scottish Flake and I am out of their Blend 333 so I will have to put an order in when the have the flake back in stock.

I mentioned in another thread or maybe it was this one about why no notice or heads on this news. Some of us could have grabbed some stock of the blends we like. It appears some of the community did have notice and were able to stock up. I do expect pipestud to have a continuous supply of listings over the next few years. That is probable a good thing. It is the other vultures who will be spamming reddit, ebay and forums for 2 or 3 times the cost that will get my wrath.

The panic buying of deranged hoarders and secondary market gougers would have descended like a stream of locust and wiped the supply out months ago. If you were a regular customer of McClelland products you had months of extra time to make your purchases. Evidently McClelland asked some tobacconists to inform their loyal customers. Human nature being what it is, I wouldn't be surprised if some folks abused that advanced info. I'd like to believe that such abuse wasn't widespread. As for myself, I did buy a few tins of blends that I'd been thinking of trying but hadn't gotten around to doing so. I'm already stocked with what I like.

the sheer volume out there, should keep prices below Penzance, etc. after it hits the secondary market.

So does anyone (@sablebrush?) have more specific info about might still be released? The original post by woodsroad at PipesMag said, "they are still tinning blends that they have in stock. But they do not foresee much, if any, additional production." So it does sound like there is going to be more coming from the factory at some point... A totally uneducated and uniformed guess would be more Frogs and more 40th, and maybe more of the various English/Balkans.

BTW, I'd like to amend my original post in this thread to read: "I thought it would be nice to have a thread simply extolling the virtues of McClelland (without speculation, politics, snide comments, jabs, insults, provocations, etc.)."

I'll holding out for when I can trade 6 tins of Christmas Cheer for an unsmoked Bo Nordh Snail. :-)
I'm expecting big initial price spikes that will fall to a more stable level eventually. However, I expect that final after market price to be quite a bit higher than it has been. There are a lot of tins out there. Estate cellars are always appearing on the market. Just last week, I got 3 tins of 2002 McC Organically Grown Flake (OGF) for under $20 each that came from an estate cellar. I can't imagine what it's price would be this week. I don't care, I'm smoking it. Now if some fool offered me $1,000 a tin, I'd smile, take the money and order 100 C&D tins.
I will be bringing one of the tins of OGF with me to the Chicago Show to pass around.

I heard about Mc closing on January 30. I began cellaring the one blend of theirs that I smoke. I was tempted to buy bunches of their 40th and other popular blends but decided against it as Karma can be a bitch.
What I have found interesting during this whole saga is that Mc has somehow become the greatest blender the world has ever known. I know plenty of people who don't care for their blends. Their standard Ketchup scent is a turnoff for a great many pipe smoker. I would argue that Samuel Gawith and Kohlhase, Kopp und Co. KG have a lot more followers than Mc. K&K makes most of the great Rattray, Wessex, and Astleys blends. Samuel Gawith Virginia flakes are for me superior to all Mc virginia's except for the Butera Dark Stoved.
Yes people are going to miss their favorite Mc blends, but there is still so much great tobacco out there.

McClelland had a definite style to their Virginias that isn't duplicated, so if that was your thing, you're out of luck. But I agree with Harris. There are a lot of great blends still being made by other blenders in their own style. There were a few McClelland blends that I liked and stocked while building my cellar, but they never were a strong presence for me.

the sheer volume out there, should keep prices below Penzance, etc. after it hits the secondary market. There will be an initial spike to take advantage of the "panic" among McClelland aficionados. Then prices will stabilize if the demand levels off. Check back in a decade. Some of these blends will go for respectable mone. McClelland turned out huge quantities of product for 4 decades, unlike Germain. Bottom line, a great supplier of top notch Virginia and Oriental blends has shut its doors and as Porky Pig always says, "That's all, folks!" Many thanks to the McNeils for supplying us a great product for so many years.

Yes people are going to miss their favorite Mc blends, but there is still so much great tobacco out there. I totally agree. I have enjoyed the froggys for a long time and I really like Balkan Blue. I have some Balkan Beauty in the cellar but have yet to crack a tin. The only reason I have jumped on anything McC recently is my fairly new love for Virginias and the release of their 40th Anniversary Flake. I did stock up on that blend. Samuel Gawith is probably my favorite though and it has been depressing seeing a couple of my favorite SG blends become hard to get. I do blame social media somewhat. It seems though as if certain people on said social media say that a certain blend is "the bomb" there becomes a rush on whatever blend was mentioned. Cabby's Mixture is one that I am really wanting to get stocked up in my cellar because that will be one incredible blend with aging. Social media has been both a blessing and a curse for pipe smoking haha. More of a blessing to be sure.

As this thread is a tribute to McClelland my last remark is slightly off topic. The fact is of the McClelland blends that I have tried I have stocked up on the ones that I liked. I will enjoy 40th ann. flake for a long time as well as 5100 and a bunch of lat blends. These blends are very enjoyable blends and I will think of Mike and Mary and their dedication to the most incredible hobby with every bowl I smoke. Hopefully down the road I will be able to trade for or sample some of the McClelland blends that I never got to try.

My other favorite blenders are SG and K&K, and I think Sutliff it totally underrated. There are many blends I enjoy from all these various lines.... but losing McC is kind of like losing a particular favorite cheese or wine, while still knowing there are plenty of other good ones out there.

I liken it to General Motors dropping Oldsmobile, though in McClelland's case it's more like GM dropping Buick.
