Good for California. Nothing like playing on-line games while deliberating a case.

Maybe it's so you can fact-check the lawyers in real-time?

Being in California, Jerry Brown is probably monitoring you to see if you're discussing the case, and how you're going to Vote!

I'm on district duty now. Two bailiffs are at the door, make everybody take off their hats and turn off the phones when we walk in for selection - The horror. When I worked, everybody got out of it with a letter from HR; however, it's one of our most fundamental constitutional rights. Every individual accused who wants a trial has the right to face between six and twelve people, depending on circumstances, who just want to get home for dinner they shouldn't be prosecuted by the government. They have to bring game or they're toast; nevertheless, they have the opportunity and it's a better deal than anybody will ever get in any other country on the planet.

WIFI is a confection, nothing more...

I always get booted of jury duty, my son is Deputy Warden at the state prison... which would never color my in weighing evidence fairly, and rendering a fair verdict.
Cell phones should not be allowed in the courtroom at all... put them in the locker that they give you for your handgun here.

...nevertheless, they have the opportunity and it's a better deal than anybody will ever get in any other country on the planet. Jury trials is one thing I'd love to see come about in Mexico. We've just started live in-person court proceedings (before everything occurred on paper or in a closed session with the judge) but I think things should go further still.

I agree, though I sat on a murder trial for ten days. I have not thought well of our system since then, though it is still the best in the world, as I can see. My case was a contract killing. The day I returned to work my plant manager asked me all about it and then said, "Oh, it was a strictly business transaction" with a wry smile. Anyway, yes, it is our duty if we expect to be treated fairly

In Harris County we have Wi-Fi in the jury assembly room, but everything has to be turned off in the court room. Jury duty is a privilege.

Spending time with other jurors can be pretty scary when you consider the fact that your freedoms rest in the judgment of some of the people serving, on the juries. In the ones that I had served on, there were always a couple of meatheads. And, I am sure that there are some competent public defenders, but based on what I have seen, I hope I never need one.
In spite of that still the best system going.

When sequestered for ten days we ate at the best restos. One night, when it was close to an end, I had lobster for dinner and pizza for desert. Damn, I only weight 225 then. We were thanked profusely for our service. One thing I learned. I didn't do it, but the few that were angrily against serving got put on as alternates or held for choosing until the last minute. Did them a lot of good. Gave me some chuckles

I was on jury duty many years ago..I hated it..I hope I never am again. My wife and I had just adopted her two nieces. Leaving home for ten days did take its toll. I do understand how you feel. They have taken Xuan a couple times, regardless that she has to care for me. Now they are letting her off as I guess they got the message I really need her. She did her duty and is a citizen of thirty years. I am so proud of her... and lucky (more Herb Caen Three Dots for Dramatwist to ferret out)
