I make blends and press them into cakes. Use mostly whole leaf tobacco that I get from Wholeleaftobacco.com, The Tobacco Butcher, and Leaf Only. This is my last "Navy Cake". Do you find the wholeleaf and Leafonly to be equal? I've only tried leafonly, and found 4 different tobacs tasted kind of ashy. Do you use one of their shredders? LeafOnly has better packaging techniques but is slightly more expensive than Wholeleaf. I generally don't taste mine until it has been blended and cased with the casing that I get from Wholeleaf and then a treatment that I give with Myers Rum and some other ingredients. Haven't experienced the ashy taste; perhaps it is something that the casing takes care of. I bought my shredder from Wholeleaf; make sure you get the one with the larger cut for pipe tobacco. It looks like this:

Only to improve an Aro. I just mix in some straight Va. Used to be 5100 but that will change next time.

FWIW, I kinda prefer cakes, I think I have more control.

One of the last things I tried was taking some of my scrap shreddy stuff sandwiched between whole leaf. .. made about 15 layers when I did it.

Don't get me wrong, a shredder would be cool to have ... just not for making flakes / plugs. You could shred up some Burley and Virginia and have a "ready to smoke" blend that requires no fussing like the Plugs do.

I bought my shredder from Wholeleaf; make sure you get the one with the larger cut for pipe tobacco. It looks like this: I wouldn't really consider that a pipe tobacco shred. It is 1mm. What you want is something along the lines of 1.6mm. But given the choice I guess 1mm is better than .8mm.

I would most definitely try a bowl of that. Does it smoke as good as it looks? In regard to blending, I regularly mix certain blends together and have some oriental tobacco that I like to add to others, but that's about the extant of it for me thus far. I plan to get some unsweetened black Cavendish the next time I place an order to experiment with as well.
