This is a question that I have wondered about for a long time. Most emphasis seems to placed on how good a tobacco becomes when aged for a long period of time. However, I would think that there may be some varieties that would be better smoked fresh. I'm no authority on the subject, so calling on some of our more experienced members to address this question.

Most aros are better fresh in my experience. C&D Autumn Evening is maple syrup and pancakes when it’s fresh and just pancakes after a year of age.
Virginia blends must have some age IMHO. A year minimum, preferably two. If a Virginia blend tastes papery or cigarettey, it’s too young.
English blends can be smoked younger than Va blends, but still benefit from a bit of age.
The one exception for Va blends that I have found is stoved Va. The stoving can allow a Va blend to taste good young. C&D Yorktown is an example. However, in terms of the original question, I think they are better aged than fresh.
So, that just leaves me with most aros as being better fresh before the casing/topping degrades. There are exceptions though such as Paul's Arrowhead Pipe Club Mixture which ages spectacularly.

I've found that Penzance tastes better fresh, or relatively fresh. Most other blends, except for aromatics and other heavily topped ones, benefit from some aging.

Carter Hall and the fresher the better . . . that's why I buy it in pouches from a high volume dealer who turns stock over rapidly.

I can relate to the Carter Hall. I had some sitting around for awhile, and it actually had a rough, sort of bitter taste.
