I favor freehands for many years & probably 70% or so of my 51 pipes are just that. However....gotta agree that some of your examples just too "way out there". I still have a few 70s PrebenHolm/BenWade examples of that out there ilk. All of your examples too small bowl diameter for my liking & do not do vulcanite. I realize much labor time involved here but for those prices, nope.
I have 4 Castello GreatLines in 3 different finishes. That's plenty departure from "classic" shapes at this stage.
Thanx for the above....will be interesting to see future replies as always.

I think there are ugly and pretty ones out there. I like a couple of those you posted, but not all. Most of my customs are more conventional patterns like billiards, Dublins and bulldogs. I have not paid more than $140 for any of my pipes.

Nope, I'm not too fond of these testicular seahorses either. I like standards, and the old Danish variations on them, not the old Danish freehands where the guy took a file and rounded the edges off a briar block, drilled a couple holes, put a stem on it and called it a pipe. You' re right, harder to make a billiard.

I paid $110 for this Oleg Loginov. I think it is very pretty.

This RD Pipes blasted brandy from Ron was $140 if I recall correctly. He dropped it from $175. Easily worth it to me.

I would suggest that you don't buy any of these.

That's one of the ones I liked, but $1200 is not even remotely in my ballpark. I would buy several pipes and a bunch more tobacco with that kind of money.

so true But, it's Steeped in organic dynamism, this Tomato! And David Bumgardner really went the extra mile trying to polish that turd with his rambling description... he really worked the lexicon on that one. I agree with you, I am not even remotely interested, and the prices make them less so. One of them pipe makers (posted above) that commands hefty prices was at the WCPS in Vegas last year. Ran into him on a Friday night and tried to strike up a conversation with him....he seemed pretty aloof... so I wrote it off as jet lag. The next morning at the show, he came across as an arrogant snob... he is a friggin pipemaker, and I was potential buyer... I have no use for the guy or his prices.

As someone who has been a pipemaker, I will stop short of making severe judgement of anyones work. That being said, I am often surprised at the pricing on some of these pipes.
I guess it's all supply and demand though. There are people out there that like a particular maker and will pay what they ask. what it's worth is all subjective.

Don, both your pipes are fine examples of a pipe that actually looks like pipe, and both are priced very fairly. 'Testicular Seahorses" That is funny. If anyone thinks I am picking on Abe Herbaugh I actually own one of his pipes. Here is what I consider a nice classic Rhodesian, so I know he can make them. I grabbed this on ebay and paid around 180.00, It smokes great and I wish he would come back to earth one day.

I am leery of carvers who self proclaim they've only been into pipes a couple of years. I heard one on a podcast state he smoked 1-2 bowls a month. Regarding prices, I am willing to pay a working man his wage, but balk at paying his mortgage.

Thankfully, what one person despises another will love. While I don't like the designs of some of them, per se, if given one I would cherish it and actually prize it as one of the more unique pipes in my collection. Go figure. ...but I agree with what you say about the price. £10 is around my price range, so $1,200 is just insane...for me.

Let's see, 1200 bucks, I'd probably sell 8 or ten pipes for that.

Kind of like Sting of the Police, he gains street cred by his work with the band, branches out and goes all “artsy”... seen it with Stevie Wonder and even Alan Parsons.
Stick with what you are good at, man!
And when you demand ridiculous prices to see you perform, I’m not paying the price of admission.

I had a thread a while back about pricing on pipes and it is these high end free hands that made me start it. How could you spend that much on some crazy looking pipe?

Cannot remember the piece he did, but at the time Stevie spread his wings and people in the industry said that he was spreading his artistic wings... I listened to it and wondered what the hell was that? As for the other titles mentioned, I am not familiar... not to say they all didn’t come back from the brink, I will be seeing Alan Parsons in June.😉
