Lately, I've been trying many varieties of tobaccos on my own. I tend to look at some reviews, especially from some of our members, but sometimes their likes or dislikes of a particular tobacco, don't match yours.
I'm looking to narrow my choices down to a few favorites, have them as my go to blends, and end the continual search for new, unobtainable blends, which we are sometimes coaxed into believing that really exist!
While such brands such as Prince Albert, Carter Hall, Sir Walter Raleigh, are most often referred to as 'Codger Blends', they have stood the test of time, and still remain the favorites of many. Our pipe smoking parents and grandparents knew what they liked, and smoked what they liked.
That's what I'm looking to do. I hope that some others know what I'm talking about, and are doing the same.
Since I just started this true official "tobacco trial' about a month ago, here are my results so far:
D&R Three Sails.....yecch!, looks and tastes like cigarette tobacco.
MacBaren Plum Cake (aged).... not bad, but a bit rough and unsmoothed.
Germains Plum Cake (aged).... about the same as above.
Frog Morton Craftburys.... definitely keepers, thought they may not be around much longer.
McCrainies Red Ribbon.....Absolutely! Should also improve with age.
Sutliff Molto Doce.... would definitely add this one
Cult Blood Red Moon....would add this one.
Carter Hall.... usually decent, but the last batch came out as a bit harsh for some reason.
Amphora Original....came across as somewhat harsh.
Half and Half..... a bit harsh.
Sir Walter Raleigh.... decent, but there are others that I like better.
Prince Albert .....decent, about the same as Sir Walter Raleigh.
Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic....surprised me, since I'm not an aromatic fan, but for taste, would add this one.
So far, under my trials, I would have McCrainies Red Ribbon, Molto Doce, Cult Blood Red Moon, and SWR Aromatic. Those are my choices so far. I still have a few more to check out, among them Edgeworth, EGR, Captain Black Series Blends, Borkum Riff Bourbon Whiskey, Proper English, Old English and a mystery blend that I made several years ago from tobaccos that I didn't like.
In the meantime, please add your comments and/or suggestions, as well as your choices for your Go to Tobacco blends.
My point of this thread is to narrow down your choices, stick with them, and be satisfied.
