I've never had it, and not sure how much I would like it, but the mystique of this blend lends itself to wanting to try it. Since it's not readily available, what blends are out there that might mimic the qualities of Penzance???

Smoker's Haven Exotique has a similar spice to Penzance, but the flavor isn't quite the same. You're not going to find a Match for it. What you have to look for is something in the same genre meaning a bit of latakia and some tangy Oriental spice. Exotique might fill that requirement, and you can pre-order it now at Smoker's Haven.

PIpestud's TR review of Smoker's Haven In-Between MIxture sez, "Germain doesn't fool me with this blend. It's Penzance in shag cut form. At least, that's my guess. Very similar flavor (if not identical), with the middle of the road English taste made heavenly by the special Germain preparation of the components listed above. A beauty of a smoke!"
I cannot confirm or deny - at least not yet! I found Exotique to me more like Margate than Penzance - more Orientals, less Latakia.
Both are ones you can pre-order from Smokers Haven.

I think both Penzance and Stonehaven are one of a kind and probably why they are soooo good. I have tried Exotique and the Rich Dark Flake and both are good but not the same. I would smoke any of them without hesitation.

Many threads on the different forums on this question.
GL Pease- Quiet Nights comes up as a popular suggestion. Always a good topic though and I have tried most every comparable blend suggested in the threads. I have been mixing Penzance 50/50 with various other similar blends so that I can stretch out my supply of it as long as possible.

As others have said, it's definitely a unique pipe tobacco. A real one-of-a-kind. For me, it's the oriental tangy notes that really sing. The latakia doesn't seem to heavy, it melds nicely with the other components.

I guess I'll never be able to smoke Quiet Nights again without thinking of burnt tires...lol I have heard some describe the flavor (and smell) of Latakia as "burnt tires". I never found it to be so, until I tried Quiet Nights. Now, it could have been the time I smoked it and my taste buds on that day. As an example, I have had pints of beers that one time tasted phenomenal, and had the same beer the next day (fresh from the keg at my local taphouse) and found the flavor had diminished, tasted completely different, etc. I will try Quiet Nights again eventually. I also need to try Meridian, and Chelsea Morning (I have had them in the cellar for a couple years, but haven't gotten to them yet). |

They worked together for those Mind Meld blends, so I'm sure there has been some shared knowledge. I'd personally like to see some of the niche Oriental stuff matched - single-leaf varietals with good VAs, and blends like 2050 and 2025, without Latakia. |

Oh, anything is possible, but given the almost fanatical attention to selection and processing that the McNeils gave their products I highly doubt anyone one will come remotely close. People have already tried and failed. Besides the equipment that they sold, they had some proprietary gear that they destroyed so no one could make what they made. And to be honest with you, why would I care about tobaccos that I can't buy? So fake? Yes, I see fakes sold overseas. I've already seen fake Esoterica showing up on eBay. |

While they are good blends, I do not find them to be equivalent or a 'match' for Penzance. To some of us it's like the Dodo Bird. Archaeologists found the bones of some I think in the 2000's. They get to hold them. Some of us just have to imagine them and be happy. |
