I posted a similar thread for Penzance. Can you give any suggestions as to similar blends?

There is no substitute for Stonehaven in the USA. RDF is not sold here, and it's very expensive to get it for overseas.

The answer to the question in my opinion is yes. I am currently smoking a tin of 2012 Mac Baren Old Dark Fired and it is amazing. I am also smoking through a batch of 2007 Stonehaven. They are very similar to my tastes and I dedicate pipes to each one. I get as much satisfaction smoking the ODF as I do the Stonehaven, both are great blends but at least with the ODF you can find it anywhere and prices are not bad. I have not smoked the bulk ODF as I prefer tins over bulk.

I love ODF, but to me, the spice content and lack of a topping makes it far enough away from Stonehaven that I don't see them as being overly similar. Are you smoking it dry or with a little moisture? It could be that very dry, it might get closer to Stonehaven.

If it's that "treacle topping" your after, try some SG Full Virginia Flake.

I was similarly going to say Orlik DSK, not so much because it's similar but it might appeal to the tastes of somebody who likes Stonehaven.

I smoke my flakes with moisture and never let it get dry. I am comparing aged to aged, 2012 compared to 2007. When fresh the topping on Stonehaven is much more prevalent and as it ages, that characteristic smooths out and the Virginia and Burley flavors are more to the forefront. The ODF ages in a similar fashion.
It has been a long time since I smoked either one of these fresh. I bought 3 pounds of the 2007 Stonehaven back in 2012 so it has been that long since I have smoked any fresh Stonehaven. Same with the ODF as I bought all of mine back in 2012 as well. Maybe when comparing fresh to fresh you don't find it similar but with years of age, they really are.

I agree with you on the aged Stonehaven.

The 2007 Stonehaven I smoked earlier today had lost some of the topping, so it was less sweeter, and was a little more savory and woody with the burley still leading the Virginia as it does when it is fresh. The 2012 ODF I smoked this evening was less sweeter, and as always, the burleys led the show over the Virginias. It was also mildly more woody with a tad less spice. But it hadn't changed enough to make me think it was very close to Stonehaven as the nuttiness and floralness from the dark Fired Kentucky is not present in Stonehaven. The two are a little closer to each other aged than fresh, but the differences age brought are not enough to make them so similar that I'd consider aged ODF is be close enough to be a match. Sort of in the same family, yes, but without the DFK, Stonehaven is still lighter in strength and doesn't have the spice and nuttiness that ODF has.
Rich Dark Flake is similar to Stonehaven, only the topping is not quite the same, and it is Virginia forward, unlike Stonehaven, which is burley forward. I haven't had it with more than a couple years of age on it, but it's still a little closer to Stonehaven than aged ODF is, in my opinion.
