Would anyone care to recommend some solid G.L. Pease Virginia forward blends? I am open to all ideas whilst I mourn McClelland's demise. I am specifically looking for blends that deliver tangy and/or sweet overall experiences. I am ok with Perique, too. Especially when it delivers the plummy raisin punch - instead of the musty barnyard (but in a good way) funk.

There;'s none of that vinegar/ketchup tang that was a McClelland staple. So if you're okay with that there are two excellent blends I can recommend. Union Square, and Telegraph Hill. The first is a Virginia and the second is a Va/Per. Check out the reviews on tobaccoreviews.com

sablebrush52 and @cap: Is there anything wrong with another brand Va? I am not a big straight Va fan, but opened up some year old OGS just now and am liking it a lot. I know very little of some of these differences, so I am looking for info as well.

I think you might enjoy Haddo's Delight if you are looking for a spicy Vaper. I wouldn't limit yourself to just Pease Virginia's as there are loads of different mfgs who make great ones.
If price doesn't scare you Peter Heinrichs Curly Block is a very special Vaper. It is sweet with flavors of figs and raisins and is also fun to play with as it comes in a big thick rope. I would also recommend you try Samuel Gawith Best Brown, Full Virginia and St James flakes. Also if you like playing with plugs the SG Kendal Plug is Best Brown in plug form.
If you like dark Virginia's, Wessex Brigade Campaign Dark Flake and Astleys no 44 are nice examples of that genre.

Haddo's is one of my favorite blends. It's one of the few that I could easily name in one of those "Name your top 10 blends" type threads. But it's not strictly a Va/Per, there's more in it, and it has a bit of booze on top. A great blend and one of the few I will buy on the secondary market when I can find a tin that isn't going through the stratosphere. Haddo's is unique and it's not subject to FDA Deeming.

Actually, an order of the blend has been sitting in my Smoking Pipes cart since it came back in stock. But it's tough to pull the trigger when it's $78 for 250 g. Thanks for the Haddo's Delight idea. How is that blend cut?

If memory serves Haddo's is a ribbon cut. It has been a long time since I have smoked it. Bite the bullet and grab the Curley Block, It only really cost .31 cents per gram. A 4 gram bowl is 1.25 and will last you a good 2 hours in a group 5 sized pipe. Tell me what you can do that is that much fun for 2 hours for only 1.25. That is how you justify things.

Look through the GLP "Fog City" series. Virginias are spotlighted. Union Square is a great straight Va. Embarcadero is a super great VaOri. Laurel Heights is a good red Va with a wee touch of Latakia.
However, I highly, highly, highly recommend not smoking any of these until there is a minimum of one year of age on the tin. The first that I tried both Union Square and Embarcadero, the tins were maybe 6 months old. They just weren’t that great. The Va was papery tasting. Jarred then and revisited them every couple months and at the 12 month mark they stopped being papery and were tasting great. I give the same advice regarding C&D as well. I’ve lost track of how many of their blends weren’t that good until after they have a year of age on them.
On a note related to GLP, in the C&D line up, I can highly recommend Interlude, Opening Night, and Yorktown as straight Va blends and Bijou as a VaOri Blend. Interlude is a very dark red Va. I find Opening Night to be very similar to Union Square but it costs slightly less. If you take Interlude and add Katerina, you have Bijou. Opening Night is stellar with 18+ months of age.
PS- I am a hard core McC Va fan boy, but I’ve done some exploring over the years. You'll never find anything like a McC Red Va, but you’ll find good Va blends for other makers.

I like your math! From what I can tell, the Curley Block comes in a plastic bag. I am assuming most people remove from the bag immediately and then divide up into smaller jars for aging/enjoying.

Cap, yeah you have to jar it when it comes in. See how really cheap it is when you do the correct math. 1.25 a bowl is cheap for 2 hours of bliss.
