Picked up two tins of Stave Aged Virginia 35 Ribbon at my local Edward's today. They were all out of Dark Star, 3 Oaks, Blackwoods Flake, Beacon Extra, 40th Anniversary, Red & Black and 5100. They had McClelland's aromatics, 100gm Oriental blends and some very old and dry sounding Blakeney's. I was happy to get the Stave Aged. I have been wanting to try it for a while. Still need a tin of 40th.

I am saving my Stave-Aged for when I have fewer tins open.

I read an interview with Mike McNeil some time ago. During the interview he highly recommended the McClelland Stave Aged 35 blend. Based on that recommendation from the owner, I picked up a few tins. Great blend.

I just found that interview - here's the quote from Talking Tobacco: SB: What is your favorite McClelland tobacco blend? Favorite non-McClelland blend?
MM: My favorite McClelland blend right now is Stave-Aged 35. I am fascinated with the mingling of the Virginias with the bourbon barrel wood. My favorite non-McClelland is Wessex Gold Sliced Virginia. It is great in a small clay or meerschaum. I find it strange, but I just don’t like it in a briar. What does that mean?

I have one lone tin, which I'll savor one day.

Beyond the obvious of Christmas Cheer, Stave-Aged 35 is my favorite McC Va blend. The bourbon sweetness and slight oakyness from the bourbon barrel stave piece is quite tasty. Luckily, being a McC fan boy, I cellared deep on my favorite blends quite a while ago.

Shane Ireland's review of Wessex Gold Slice.... I thought that was Carlton from the Fresh Price.

...now that it's going away, I want to try some. Humans are nuts.

I'm a fan of Blakeney's Best Latakia Flake, and yes it sounds dry in the can, at least any I have purchased over the years have sounded that way. However, for me, it's one of my favorite Latakia tobaccos, almost as good as Penzance, so I'd buy that bad boy. Mind you that's just my opinion, and if you don't like Latakia, it's a moot point. I know that there are some other tobaccos in the Blakeney's Best blends, but I have never tried them.
