I've just called a local Tinderbox to ask about C&D blends and they told me they don't carry any due to effects by recent pipe tobacco laws "hitting them hard." I've seen some people talk about laws being part of the reason McC is closing. What exactly are these laws? Are they just high tax on tobacco products. Is it something that is really concerning enough that it is closing companies?

If their reffering to the 'Deeming Laws'. In short, the FDA back in 2009 (I think) approved regulations stating that blends produced after Feb 14th 2014 requiered testing and approval by the FDA. The assumption by the FDA is that consumers need to know exactly what's in the blends. Tobacco companies have estimated costs of up to 100k per blend (highest estimate I've read) to go through the approval process and consequently suggested that rather than seek approval, they'd stop producing these blends. These regulations were meant to take effect in February 2018 but the FDA has apparently pushed enforcement of the regulations until 2021 (what I read, maybe someone knows more) even if they haven't withdrawn them. Many distributors are weary of holding blends that they may not be able to sell prior to the new regulations coming into effect (theoretically that could be tomorrow as they are still in place even if enforcement was placed on hold).

A second opinion, you might say. Or ask a different person in the same store.

I live very close to the state line but my closest store in the state is in Little Rock and it is about 3 hours away from me.

So is that why McC and Dunhill are closing? Are we going to see this happening to all blends?

I am going to keep trying blends and the ones that really trip my trigger I am going to put on the cellar list and when I have funds I will buy what I can. There is nothing worse than knowing that a certain blend or certain blender will no longer be available so you go spend some money and then end up hating it. Try all the blends you can and again, if you really like a certain blend then start stocking. This way you won't lose out if your favorite blend goes away. McClelland made it clear that the new methods of picking crops reduced the quality of their leafs especially red Virginia. We, none of us, honestly know what is going to happen with the FDA because 3 years is a long way away and things could change for the better. Doubtful but you never know.

There's more detailed info on another thread but the gist is that the final owner of the brand wants to shift the lifestyle brand away from tobacco to fit a new company expansion and thus decided to stop licensing the name and recipes to STG. McClellend seems to be a case of the owners wanting to retire and close down the company partially due to a series of problems they are facing on the production side.

However, if the OP is interested in C&D stuff, Smokingpipes.com has plenty in stock, so Tinderbox is not the benchmark.

I've heard both of these explanations but people blaming it on "laws" without saying what they meant got me wondering, lot of that on facebook.

Word on the street indicates that SmokingPipes may have another follow-up shipment arriving soon that the OP may be interested in keeping tabs on. SP has cleared their McC page and only has listed a few that includes Balkan Blue, some FM stuff, etc. So, an email alert may be in order for your "wish list." Just saying!

I don't follow facebook but I can imagine that a lot of people just find "laws" explanation enough whether it's the whole story or not. I mean, whilst Dunhill pipe tobacco is a big seller in the pipe world it's worth very little in in comparison to the lifeystle brand or even Dunhill cigarettes. It's not far-fetched that the owner wants to focus the Dunhill name on selling shoes, cologne, and hats that he sees as a better profit centre. It's equally not far-fetched to think that a couple wants to retire after 40 years of labour intensive work and mentally exhausting quality control. In my opinion the big issue facing the industry isn't so much the FDA regulations but the end of government subsidies for tobacco farmers in the US and host of other countries.

I noticed that as well on the SP site. It looks like they may have given a clue as to what will be included in the last shipment if there is one. No 40th though.

Who knows what blends will actually show-up on SP loading docks, and what ever these blends are, will be revealed on their final McC page soon...
