They had one tin of McClelland - I had to ask and he checked in the back and came out with 1 stinking tin of British Woods. He even said, ooops, I guess we missed one last weekend or somebody was trying to save it. Of course I bought it even though I have never had it.
He said that over the weekend about 6 individuals came in and bought everything they had. These individuals were not in the same party but trickled in throughout the day. They even bought all of the house bulk that they stored behind the counter using McClelland bulks to blend. I saw the 6 empty large jars that were the empty house blends sitting on the floor. When I asked what he was going to do with them he stated that they will use Sutliff and others and try to come up with new house blends. He seemed like he was a bit down about the whole thing.

These things often have a knock-on effect. It's sad to see it play out.
But hey - he might end up blending the best house blend ever and become a legend. I love legends.

I have been pipe smoking for about 12 years and with social media it feels like pipe smoking is at its peak right now (just my opinion and it could be considered a second peak looking back at history). I mentioned in another thread that if someone on youtube that has quite a few followers mentions a new favorite blend that blend almost immediately becomes hard to get. It absolutely crazy. In my neck of the woods I only know two other pipe smoker. For one it is just a minor hobby and doesn't smoke that often and the other smokes Sir Walt. exclusively. Trying to get a pipe club going in my area is pretty much impossible. Either there aren't many pipe smokers around here or they aren't involved in social media in any way. But obviously there are many pipe smokers right now. Anyway, kind of rambling but these last couple of months have been the craziest in my pipe smoking career.

Indescriminate purchasing could be a sign of people buying exclusively for resale, possibly by non-pipers.

I have my doubts if there are really more pipe smokers than 10 years ago or if the ones that remained are simply better connected by social media than ever before. I ran numbers on another thread for pipe smoking in the US but the gist is that about 5m lbs of pipe tobacco were consumed in 2004 in comparison to 1.25m lbs in 2014. By 2014 there were around 2.2m pipers of which around 725k smoked everyday or somedays. Country Squire Radio did mention initial reports of around 1.4m lbs of pipe tobacco being produced in the US in 2017 though they are unconfirmed by the Dept. of Agriculture.

I'm still getting in some tins that I ordered a couple of weeks ago. I think the mass panic is bogging down shipping departments. I'm content with what I have, which is a good way to be.

the majority of USA pipe smokers don't belong to pipe forums and never have. I do think they monitor online pipe activity though.

peteguy I think, while we're on coming up with new blends I think we need to call in Grandpa Munster, Ma Ma from the Addams Family, Dr. Frankenstein, and Mr. Wizard to help recreate Red Wine Soup. It could take years and cost thousands of lives, but let's do it for humanity's sake!
