Never saw a tenon like that in mine. How does it work; is there an airhole going through it?

Never saw a tenon like that in mine. How does it work; is there an airhole going through it? Never saw one like that either. It's one piece with the hole through it. It won't pass a fat pipe cleaner through the bit easily and I'm out of skinny ones at the moment.

a stem swap? Bowl looks mint, nic traces on the screw tenon. It was lightly smoked. About the bottom 1/4th of the bowl has just a light beige discoloration and the rest of the bowl has extremely light cake. I'm thinking the stem and bowl is original but the tenon isn't. When I leave off that spacer the stem doesn't line up properly. That being said, it may be the spacer came with it. I have a CAO that came with an acrylic spacer that fits between the stem and bowl and it was like that when I got it in 1984.
