A question for all of you McClelland fans. Now that they're gone, do you have another preferential blend, or will you be trying new ones?
Anything similar to what you were smoking before?

For Virginia, I will probably smoke Rattray's Hal o' the Wynd, if I can find it in bulk. For VaPers, I will go to Samuel Gawith or Gawith & Hoggarth.

My Pie Chart at SP Stats has stopped at 13% for McClelland, so guess I will carry on with the other 87% of tobaccos that I smoke.

...I'll smoke up an extensive cellar of McC, but I won't be mourning their exit. LOTS of tobaccos available I've never tried. Adventure. Adventure...

I haven't been a big McClellend smoker in the past so it hasn't changed my plans too much, but the difficulties with obtaining Skiff or Presbyterian have led me to try Match Presbyterian, Standard Mixture Mellow, Chelsea Morning, and (soon) Meridian & Durbar. I'm upset to think that I won't just be able to saddle down with a few blends that I can get used to but will continue having to jump around depending on availability. The one McClellend I wanted to try and wasn't able to was Just Plain Nuts which I can't imagine was anything great but would have wanted it for experimentation.
Maybe my tastes will change enough to where I'm more willing to give the other blends I accumulated in my search for the tobacco palate I like more of a chance. I did start with Vintage Syrian and 3 Oaks Syrian before hitting on Skiff and Presbyterian (I'm the adventureous sort).

The same baccy I smoked before they were gone. As I mentioned in the other 10 threads, everything has a just as good if not better alternative, except for maybe 5100.

Great post zambini . Very informative, and most likely echoes the sentiments of many others as well!

continuing on with my favs from C&D, Pease & Hermit/Capt Earle. Nothing against McClelland for most part but that Syria latakia just didn't do it, and yep the "ketchup" thang. Kudos to the McNeils...their way of doing things top shelf for all the years & happy retirement.

Other than FMOTT I'm not a big McC smoker. While it pains me to see a premier company exit the market I was more concerned most of the Irish and British plugs were discontinued ( Velvan, Mick McQuaid, Warrior); so I stocked up on them as well as Revor (just in case). Thankfully Peterson Perfect Plug is still readily available......at least for now.

I just counted my blends in my cellar and I have 38. Only one of them is a MC blend, Butera Royal Vintage Dark Stoved is the only one as it is made with Lemon Virginia's. I cannot smoke blends with Red Virginia so MC has been off my radar for years.
I believe Samuel Gawith makes some of the finest Va's out there. Best Brown,Kendal Plug, Full Virginia and St James are one of my most cellared blends. Wessex is another company that is big in my cellar. Brigade Campaign, Brown Virginia Flake, Gold Virginia Flake and Gold Brick are all tasty blends for me. I have big holdings in Capstan Blue Flake, Dunhill Flake and Deluxe Navy Rolls as well. One thing I have learned over the years is that if you do find something you love, cellar it fast and deep because you just don't know when something is going the way of the dodo. Now I do understand that many people are not in the position to cellar quickly or very deep. The only thing I would suggest is that you may want to concentrate on your cellar and leave the pipes for down the road as they will always be available.

I like the idea of cellaring per se but it's not a feasable option for me given that I live in an apartment in the city centre. I've got a drawer, I'd like Planta and SG to help me keep that drawer near full.

Zambini, Planta makes one of my favorite blends Fribourg & Treyer Cut Virginia Plug. It is a tasty Virginia Flake, not a plug. Not really sure why they call it a plug.

With the exception of their reds, McClelland never figured big in my smoking, so I'll continue to enjoy what I cellared, Wessex, Rattray's, Astley's, GL Pease, Motzek Strang, HU, Mac Baren, Hearth & Home, etc, with the addition of some McClelland blends that I picked up last year before the fecal matter hit the spinning blades. I still have McCranie's that I bought 5 years ago. I have plenty of choices. I wouldn't be surprised to see prices on McClelland blends drop in a few months as the shock wears off and the sheer amount of it outstrips demand. At 20,000 tins, 40th is the smallest of any of their production runs. And if prices don't fall on McClelland, I don't care as I don't need it.

For easy to get baccy (Virginia and VaPer's), I'd go for Samuel Gawith over McClelland any day. That is what will be smoking.
Also Strang (which you also cannot get anymore) and HU tobaccos are excellent. Also Wessex makes some good blends. I'd start there.

I have a good amount of McC stored away, and probably smoke them about 1/4 of the time. That'll continue, alongside SG, Boswell, McConnell and lots of miscellaneous stuff I haven't tried. Brebbia, Dan, Rattray, Solani.... I have probably 60-75 tins, and almost none are duplicates so for me it's all about experimenting and exploring.
