So I won a bid on ebay for 2 Captain Black pipes. They came in the 1 box (I think it was a box for 1 pipe, but the other was shoved in too). One is rusticated, but it sounds like it's plastic when I tap it, and the inside looks plastic. I think it might have been pre-carbonated cos i can't see any wood anywhere.
Short of taking a cut out of the pipe, is there any way to tell if I've got briar or plastic?

What does the inside of the stemmel look like when you take off the stem? Man that would suck if they were plastic. Is there anything stamped anywhere?

They could have been made from Brylon.

I wonder if you got a Brylon pipe there. Brylon was( or maybe still is) made by the Dr. Grabow bunch (Yello-Bole, I think). Basically a mixture is briar dust and nylon. Notoriously bad smokers but fun to show. I have one and keep it to remind me of the follies of my way.

I have a YB Brylon Straight Dublin that actually smokes well, but JimInks The Man From I.N.K.S. could fry an egg on the outside of the bowl

To my recollection, pipes branded Captain Black were never made in Brylon. I think what you have is a dense polymer looking high sheen finish, over briar.. Many manufacturers have used it.

I believe they are an Orlik sub-brand. The fact that they are made in England pretty much clinches the fact that they aren't plastic. Certainly decent pipes that should smoke fine.

Captain Black pipes were made in both England and France. I doubt very much that they are plastic. If they are ones that I watching that came from the UK, you got yourself 2 nices pipes and one hell of a deal!

Your pipes were made by Orlik. The B- denotes a polished pipe and the BX- denotes a sandblasted one. Is the stem logo a little anchor..? Congratulations. You got yourself a bargain to boot.
