Doing a Google search, I ran across this over at PM by HunterTRW from a few years back:
Is that true?
I thought that Carl had died while they were married.
I know that his grandfather started McClellands, and Carl’s book is a must have for a lot of pipe smokers. Obviously, any malady with the brain can have profound changes in one’s life... if the above comment is true, so sad for such a remarkable family history and knowledge to leave the hobby in such a manner.

Awesome read, very informative and makes me really want to dig into much more history of pipe tobacco. I'd like to get a copy of that book.

Very interesting thread. Ehwa died in 1996. So he and Mary must have been divorced since she married Mike McNeil in 1993.

...yes Mary and Carl divorced...Mike was basically an 'understudy" of Carl's when at Diebel's...When Carl and Mary created McClelland's Mike rejoined Carl in learning the McClelland process...after Carl's medical issues and lack of motivation to re-enter the business...Mike and Mary began their teamwork at the helm of McClelland...

This could use a good screen writer. Quite a tale to tell.

Thanks for that link, trailboss . Sounds like Barry Levin was almost as much a part of McClelland as the O'Neils - being directly responsible for the Personal Reserve and Craftsbury lines, which have some of McC's most iconic and bestselling blends. The thing about Ballena Suprema cigars also stood out. Anyone ever try them? I can't remember ever seeing or hearing of them. I'm guessing they're long gone, but found this for posterity:

I thought that Carl Ehwa had died in the accident as well. Sad story. His tome, The Book of Pipes and Tobaccos, is a must have for all pipe and tobacco enthusiasts. Nonpareil.

Mary is good at artwork... Mary knows how to run a business pretty well... Mike admits that some of the blends he was attempting had him at a brick wall until Mary gave advice.. Mary writes a pretty good article.... I think she might do well.

That looks like some Challah bread. Very tasty bread, and this looks like an excellent example of it.

The stories of Carl Ewa and Barry Levin are tragic. Barry dropped dead and Carl Lingered for years. Mary moved on, survived and thrived and Bear's family fell apart ending in prison time for his son after a drug bust where he was reportedly trying to make some cash to pay back the guys in the hobby he ripped off.

Indeed sad. One of our Albuquerque drivers had a stellar career, millions of miles with no accidents, and literally risked his life pulling people from burning vehicles. The company hired his son on, and he was busted selling a set of doubles filled with plasma tv’s. Sometimes with mighty oaks, the acorn falls far away from the tree.

Very true, though it's also true that great men do not always make great fathers. I hate hearing evil parenting stories about uncles or friends I admire, but they're sadly all too common. Same with some mothers. Just a general statement, BTW - not meant to reflect on anyone mentioned in this thread, none of whom I know.

Wonder if we all write letters to the former owners of McClelland's they will feel sorry for us and re-start the company?

Having recently retired (aug 15 2017) and having sold my business, I can say without any doubts it was time to say good bye. I have a feeling Mary and Mike have had a load of stress removed from their lives and may be asking themselves why they waited so long to do it.
I would be willing to bet a load of dough, they are not coming back so that their customers can be happy once more.

Wish them good luck in their retirement, MCClelland Tobacco will be missed, but we will all find in time a substitute and will continue to keep in our cellars their products!
