On everyone of Mike's listings he explicitly says whether a pipe cleaner will pass with a little twist or not at all. No one else in the estate or even in the new pipe world does this. The only one who comes close is Marty Pulvers as he will also talk about this on many of his pipes. No one does it on every single pipe like Mike does.
For me if a pipe doesn't pass a cleaner with ease then it is a deal breaker. I won't even accept one that needs a twist to get it through. I believe we as pipe smokers should not settle for pipes that don't pass a cleaner, even full bents made right will pass one. I emailed Smokingpipes yesterday asking them to please add this pipe cleaner thing to all of their estate and new pipes. I believe if the pipes that don't pass a cleaner sit and sit as unsold, the makers will get their acts together and start drilling their pipes properly.
We as pipe smokers should never settle for anything less. We need to start a movement, no pass, no buy. If someone wants to trademark that saying, by all means do so, just make sure I get half the profits please.

Thanks for the kind words and support. While in my heart of hearts I agree with you, on some shapes, it's just incredibly difficult to make this possible 100% of the time. On any pipe with less than a 3/4 bend it should "always" be possible. On a full bent, such as an Oom Paul it's not always the case. Also like you, it is a deal breaker for me. No pass, no buy. I've let allot of stunning pipes pass through my fingers due to this. Could I have corrected some or sent them to someone to have it done, sure. That being said ........ not passing a pipe cleaner tells me either ... the carver is not a pipe smoker, and doesn't know any better , or it's not an important factor to them as far as how a pipe smokes. Sometimes that is true, most often it is not. Regards Michael J. Glukler ps cigrmaster ...... does this mean I need to keep sending you $20.00's?

That is a fine service to the customer and helps with the buying decision process. I've lost count of the number of straight Peterson pipes I passed on because they wouldn't pass a pipe cleaner. I don't know how they could let them out of the factory like that.

Mike, "not passing a pipe cleaner tells me either ... the carver is not a pipe smoker, and doesn't know any better , or it's not an important factor to them as far as how a pipe smokes" I have noticed that a disproportionate number of Danish, Austrian and German pipes don't pass a pipe cleaner. I am talking about pipes only bent to 1/8-1/4 and they still don't pass. When I look at Italian and British high grade pipes I see far fewer pipes not pass a cleaner even when full bent. For example here is a pipe that doesn't have much of a bend and yet it doesn't pass a cleaner. briarblues.com/fg126.htmNow take this Italian pipe which is as full bent as your gonna see. briarblues.com/alc18.htmI just wonder if the Danish and European pipe smokers just don't care about this issue and it is more of an American thing? As far as the 20's go, I am still waiting for a fiver. lol

Pap, straight Petersons that didn't pass a pipe cleaner? How is that even possible if the pipe is made on a machine? Do the workers do it on purpose like Cuban cigar rollers roll plugged cigars on purpose?

cigrmaster; The Hedegaard is a 9 mm filter, which changes the game completely. It also has an adapter in place. For most of Peter Hedegaard's pipes, unless they have his " under bend shank" they will pass a cleaner. The L'Anatra is only a 1/2 bent. Here is an almost full bent. briarblues.com/rb17.htmRegards Michael J. Glukler

Mike, I owned plenty of 9mm Winslow pipes and they all passed a cleaner without an adapter, are those pipes different in some way?
Now that full bent is a great example of someone taking the time to drill his pipe properly.

Due to most if not all pipe cleaner today come from China, and a high percent are bent at the end. I have straight pipes by Savinell and Rossi don't pass a cleaner unless you make absolutely sure the end of the cleaner is straight, and that only works sometimes. The majority of my pipes are bent anyway. The "P" lip pipes don't pass a cleaner anyhow. My 2018 St. Patrick's Day does. Happy Pi Day!

...I just wonder if the Danish and European pipe smokers just don't care about this issue and it is more of an American thing?... I wouldn't know whether the rest of the Danish pipe smokers don't care, but to me it's no big issue if a pipe passes a pipe cleaner or not. As soon as the pipe has cooled after smoking, I take it apart and clean it and I haven't the need for a pipe cleaner midsmoke all that often. I haven't given it much thought really.

Stan, my theory is correct. You are the only Danish pipe smoker I have met so that means everyone of the others has to be like you and doesn't care about pipe cleaners passing through their pipes. How is that for stereo typing?

Now that full bent is a great example of someone taking the time to drill his pipe properly. Poul Winslow knows how to make a pipe as well, and probably better than anyone in the business. His personaly made pipes are amazing, and he guarantees that the bottom of his line will smoke as well as the best.

For me it is nice if my pipes can pass a cleaner, but some of my favorites will not. It is not a factor for me, but YMMV.

I know of an ebay seller who puts the pipe cleaner test in the description. Very under rated seller.

Same here...I have to agree that it is nice to have a pipe E-tailer that goes the extra mile. I bet if you guys forward on a tin of Edgeworth slices with a five dollar bill, Mike can go one more extra mile and take the pipe for a test drive...If he refuses to do so I can arrange a third party deal. I am that kind of guy. As for Peterson's, all of mine pass the pipe cleaner test even the P-lip system pipe if I work it....I don't doubt what John says though, I have heard a lot of others say the same.

ronv69 - I do not know why, but Poul Winslow slides under the Scandinavian collector radar. IMHO he is highly under rated and worth taking a very serious look at. Interesting shapes and well made.
trailboss, well maybe not Edgeworth slices, BUT for a tin of Copes Escudo.... no need to add the $5.00.

herbinedave, agreed. Far more to the equation than just the pipe cleaner test. It is just one aspect.

My Danish Stanwells, Johs, Kai Nielsen, and Sara Eltang (made by Tom) all pass cleaners fine. The ability to pass a cleaner is important to me. I’m a relatively dry smoker, but like to occasionally wick some moisture or insert a cleaner when setting down the pipe for a bit.

Although I have many pipes that don't easily pass the pipe cleaner test, they do generally smoke well ...I do, however, prefer a pipe to pass a cleaner effortlessly because a clean pipe just tastes better to me. I like to be able to wick away moisture mid-smoke or push through obstruction. A poor angle that obstructs passthrough can frustrate me, and that is a state of mind I don't wish to associate with my beloved calming passtime.

I was just looking at the ones on Mike's site and noticed a lot of Danish, German and Austrian pipes didn't pass a cleaner. I have around 70 pipes and everyone passes a cleaner. I have a number of criteria when buying a pipe and passing a cleaner is just one of them.
