This should not be a thing. electrek.co/2018/03/19/uber-self-driving-prototyp-fatal-crash-police/"The company claimed that the vehicle was being driven by the engineer at the time it ran a red light, but other reports contradicted Uber’s statement. It led to them moving most of their effort to Arizona, where one of their prototypes was quickly involved in an accident – though the police said Uber was not at fault." Not enough words. ExChef

ExChef, this is one of the reasons I feel so blessed, even not being able to get out of the house, save to the backyard on occasion. The self driving thing upsets me to no end. I managed to do more than I thought I would in life, and still working at more from home. I don't think I have the nerve to do what it takes to be out in the world today. Having been a truck driver (local) for a while, and knowing truck drivers here, I pray for their safety.

I wonder how many pedestrians will be hit by human drivers today? I saw a few of them around Scottsdale when I was there and would have no problem riding in a self driving Uber.

More than should ever have to be concerned about it. I am not sure which scares me more, a self-driving car or one with an actual human driver. As a cyclist, I know that I take my life into my own hands every time I head out on the road for a ride. I have been buzzed, I have been cursed at, I even had a driver pass me on the left when I was signaling that I was making a left turn. All because the person behind the wheel couldn’t be inconvenienced for the 10-15 seconds it would take to ensure my safety was taken into account. ExChef

Call me old fashioned, but I'm scared that, if this takes off (not literally... Could you imagine that!?), this is going to be a frequent headline.

This afternoon news is reporting the first Pedestrian Fatality by Uber Automated vehicle in Arizona. I feel this technology is being rushed, with marketing forces and visions of $$$ driving it (no pun intended). It's all Jetsons at this stage as far as I am concerned, but it is taking place on city streets, not film.

The ai would work ok if there were no humans to get in the way... But nobody... No computer, no matter how smart, can account for human unpredictability.
Not saying that's the cause, but it can be a big player in situations like this.

Uber has screwed the pooch on automonous vehicles.
My son works for Waymo, part of the Google team in Phoenix, and he is the pilot to the computer. It is quite grueling, because although the computer is driving, he has to have his hands hovering over the wheel as the data is collected and he has to be instantaneously ready to switch modes, even though he has never had a close call.
A former employee of Waymo stole some of the proprietary in technology and transferred it to Uber resulting in a 300 million dollar judgment... karma is a bitch.
My son said that although he was septical at first, he has come to the realization that this technology is far superior to the average human, and I have to concur... looking from my Mack tractor the other day, 18 out of 20 drivers I passed we’re texting while driving.... It is getting really bad.

I find it bizarre that there's supposed to be a difference between "human error" and something going wrong with a machine. Humans make and program the machines! At least for now....

This is the kind of technology that needs to be almost perfect before it is utilised and it isn't there yet.

I too have observed that the majority of the drivers on the freeway and side streets are looking at their phones more than at the road. We need a law that phones must be disabled in a moving vehicle. I know that this sounds drastic, but from my observations, 90% of the drivers shouldn't be allowed on the road. Not to mention the idiots that walk in front of trains and other traffic with their earbuds blareing. And the teens that walk into walls and people because they aren't watching where they are going. A woman who was robbed and beaten here last month had her earbuds in when she was attacked. If she hadn't, the security video showed that she most likely would have noticed that the attack was coming in time for evasive action. A college professor wearing earbuds was killed when she rode her bicycle into the path of the Houston Medical Center train. She was wearing earbuds. They blamed the transit system. How can you guard again human stupidity? It won't be safe again until all transportation is controlled by robots. Sure, people will still be killed and injured, but at a much lesser rate.

I'm an IT guy, well an IT paper pusher now, but you get the point. I'm a firm believer in technology and how it can improve our world. At the same time, technology is what is contributing to increased rates of vehicular fatalities. Distracted driving in 2015 was the cause of 3,477 fatalities and 391,000 injuries. www.nhtsa.gov/risky-driving/distracted-drivingThough no loss of life is acceptable, I would think that even a 50% reduction in those numbers would justify autonomous vehicles. There is no technology that is ever perfect... ever.

I'm all for the system we have in place. You know- Where humans use machines as tools and not the other way around.
