Hey fellow pipers, By now most of the folk on the other forum on which I’m active know me for an unashamed cheap-assed bargain hunter. I find hunting down estates at good prices to be half the fun of this great hobby of ours. Thought I’d share this one with you which I picked up off a local auction site for just a hair over the equivalent of 5$. It’s a Stanwell de Luxe and the “Regd. No.” stamping, which according to Pipephil was discontinued in the late 60s to very early 70s would seem to indicate that it has some age to it. It has a shape stamp of 490, but I have been unable to find anything on the web about that, so any comments on the shape are welcome. Unfortunately, it has a blemish on the stem which I assume is bubbling from being burned at some point, but at that price, I think I can live with it. Other than that I think it cleaned up pretty nice, and shows some nice grain. The before pics are from the auction site. Before: After a little TLC:

Beautiful restoration as always Mark! Not overdone, but just right to show its age. It is in fact a Stanwell shape 90; described in the catalogs as "Freehand, ball shaped, saddle mouthpiece by Sixten Ivarsson-1951". Don't get too excited , it was not carved by Sixten, but only designed by him for Stanwell. We will have to chat about ownership of that beauty at the next pipemeet

The 4 in front of the 90 should indicate the series/finish of the pipe. E.g. 790 indicates a shape 90 in Royal Bark finish and 190 indicates a shape 90 in Royal Briar finish. The 4 thus probably indicates the De Luxe finish.

I have a 486 De Luxe. Smokes like a dream! And if I remember correctly, Alan (owner of Sturks, a local tobacconist) have a 90 shape De Luxe estate in a box somewhere. If you're nice to him, he might even show you!

Bumping this old thread for two reasons: 1) To show Chadhawk and Stanhill, and 2) to inform you that I am now the proud owner of this pipe (Thank you for the kind gift, mark!)

I would not believe they were the same pipe, save the brethren here seem to go along with it. Fantastic

The 4 in front of the 90 should indicate the series/finish of the pipe. E.g. 790 indicates a shape 90 in Royal Bark finish and 190 indicates a shape 90 in Royal Briar finish. The 4 thus probably indicates the De Luxe finish. That depends on the time period. In the early fifties, the pre-no. indicated the price group. Here is an example: Stanwell pricing categories – Early fifties 100 – 199: Best Make 200 – 299: de Luxe 300 – 399: Old Briar 400 – 499: Fine Briar 700 – 799: Sandblast Extra 800 – 899: Sandblast de Luxe 900 – 999: Royal Tan (Tanshell blast)

Such a nice restoration! I'm glad the thread was bumped after a couple of years. I probably would have never browsed it otherwise.
