I did a search on smoking flake tobacco and preferred methods. Nothing popped up so I wanted to ask the good folks here.
I’ve heard smoking flakes out of bulldog pipes works well and I’ve been trying. Curious to see what pipes you smoke flakes out of and :
1: do you dry the flakes a bit first? 2: to you fold and stuff? 3: or do you rub them out?
I’ve folded and stuffed flakes in my poker and some deeper bowls but for the bulldog, I’ve been rubbing them and the stuffing them but they are still a bit difficult for me to keep lit.
How does everyone do it and am I using the best pipe in a bulldog or should I stick to others?
Thanks!!

...out of 10 responses, you'll get 15 opinions. I rub it out and the type of pipe is irrelevant to my smoking. YMMV

IMHO, compressed leaf needs even more dry time than ribbon.

Generally narrower bowls work better for fold and stuff. It concentrates the heat a bit better. I will fold and stuff certain blends (dark strong kentucky) and rub out others (luxury bullseye flake). Depends on the way they've smoked for me in the past. Theres a massive thread on this from the flake guru mr moo over on psf that has a scale for drying based on the fold amd stuff. Perfect according to the scale is a 2 or when about half the strands of the flale break when folded cross grain. Dark strong kentucky is this way straight from the tin, and I've noticed the flavors are a bit muted when rubbed out. This is what works for me a relative newbie at it, and as always ymmv. Good luck and sweet smokes.
Edit: when I rub out a flake it goes in the pipe right after.

Some flakes need some drying and others don't. When it comes to a soft flake such as Capstan Blue, I fold and stuff them. For a denser flake like Samuel Gawith Full Virginia flake I will cube cut it. I never rub out my flakes, just personal preference. If I am smoking a coin like Escudo, I will fold and stuff those. I like my flakes to be a bit moist as I get better flavors than from a dry flake. It will also burn cooler with some moisture in it. Examples of the perfect humidity right out of the tin are Dunhill Flake, Capstan Blue, Fribourg & Treyer Cut Virginia Plug. Flakes that need drying are the Samuel Gawith offerings.
Flakes take some practice but are well worth it to my tastes as I smoke them 98% of the time. As far as pipes, I use my group 4-5 sizes most of the time with shapes such as Dublins, Billiards, Apples,Rhodesians and Brandy's.

I always rub out my flakes, at least to some extent. The thinner the flake, the less I rub them out. Drying time depends on how moist the flakes are to begin with.

Flakes are my favorite and I think cube cutting is my favorite method now on most flakes. Have fun with it and try all the different ways. Experimentation is a fun part of pipe smoking. For fold and stuff I would dry the flake out a bit before stuffing otherwise you will get cramps from relighting lol

Here's the 16th opinion out of 10: in my narrow stacks, I stuff the flakes in vertically after folding lengthwise into sticks. For Standard pipes I rub 'em out. In either case I let 'em get pretty dry, otherwise I run out of matches.

I have very few pipes, I can use for fold'n'stuff without getting in trouble; incessant relighting and the use of foul language, so normally I rub'n'stuff. Blue Capstan 'Navy Cut' and Solani's 'Aged Burley Flake' smoke right out of the tin, Samuel Gawith's 'B.S. Flake' needs to be wrung out and dried for a couple of hours.

I like a bit of moisture in my flakes. I usually tear them in half and stuff 3/4 of the bowl, then I rub out some for a better initial light for the top 1/4 of the bowl.

if their really frustrating you Scott, take scissors to them and crimp cut from the end. As mentioned, this home style cube cutting, aids a clean and steady burn. Also, the squat bulldog makes a very satisfactory pipe once you match the cut to it. Good luck.

Dried first then folded and slightly rubbed to loosen up the denser flakes.

I used to let flakes sit out to dry & then rub them out. I'd sometimes let them dry too long & get unwelcomed results.
Now I rub them out first & then let them dry. That way I don't get smaller bits & dusty crumbs.

I never rub or cube. I either fold and stuff or break up and stuff, or do the fire kindling thing with sticks vertical in the chamber. Never tried cannonballing.
I dry only as necessary for lighting well.

I fully rub flakes on a coffee filter and let them sit for 30-45 minutes. I have no idea how fold and stuff works. I would have to open a tin and wait 6-7 months before even attempting. Steam is the stuff bad smokes are made of.
