1. Learn all you can from literature, friends or forums such as this.
2. Take everything you learn with a healthy dose of skepticism.
3. TRY as many different pipes and tobaccos as you can.
4. TRUST your own opinion more than anything you have learned, based on what YOU like and what works for YOU.
5. Be nice and respectful of everyone else's opinion; they are still learning no matter how long they have smoked a pipe. (NOBODY has all the answers... even if they claim they do.)

That's very good advice. As someone who frequently scorched his tongue when he first started and still can if I'm not careful, mine is don't puff like a freight train. If you sip at a slow to moderate pace you can avoid the pain and the tobacco will taste much better.

Sage advice you give, Dramatwist . So true and pertinent. Another thing, don't become a pipe or tobacco snob. One man's man's trash is another man's treasure. (Your #5 covers this.)

I enjoy natural blends a whole bunch and love English blends, that said I have more bulk aromatics than anything and have a growing collection of jarred codger blends as well. I have tried Lakeland blends but them horrid.. doesn't mean I want them banished..

And enjoy the ride. Pipe smoking can be such a fun and interesting hobby so have fun with it. Have fun getting to know others because as with most hobbies, having people to enjoy the hobby with really makes the it more interesting and fulfilling. Thank God we all don't have the same tastes because we'd never be able to get tobacco lol. Go with what's good for you.

Great advice DT. I would add, the more expensive the pipe does not guarantee a better pipe. Inexpensive doesn't mean cheap.

See my first ever post (pipe question),and you will see I just bought a pipe in Spain having travelled over there thinking I could manage without one for 3 weeks (would just rely on cigars!), and at only 20 euros it smoked from the first bowl as well as any pipe I've ever had!

Good advise.
Some people get pretty carried away especially right out of the gate.
In the span of time there where probably more people that owned one pipe than those that have ten or more.
And more that smoked one blend vs a blend a week.
Take time to enjoy what you got.

It’s pipe smoking, not brain surgery. Preferences to pipes and baccy will occur with time. I would say get the techniques down. Learn how to load baccy, lighting, tamping and cadence. Only personal experience can accomplish all the above. Sometimes we make things too complicated. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and end up with analysis paralysis when starting out. A lot of good information is offered in this forum, as mentioned skepticism is good advice IMO.

the world is too much with me . . . forget which poet said that, but I see a correlation there with the tons of Internet advice available today.
* not a criticism of any of the above posts, just an observation.
