Thief chased but gets away with cash from Riegel’s, Fort Wayne Police told
A thief who robbed the downtown Riegel’s Pipe & Tobacco Shop and was chased ended up slipping away through Fort Wayne’s government buildings Monday afternoon.
At 3:49 p.m. Monday, a Fort Wayne Police officer in a department squad car at the intersection of Main and South Calhoun streets, was flagged down by Riegel’s manager, who said the store at 624 S. Calhoun St., had just been robbed, according to a police report. The report classified the incident as a strong-arm robbery, which does not involve a thief displaying or mentioning a weapon.
The manager chased the thief north on the sidewalk, westbound through the alley north of Riegel’s, and then west through the parking lot behind the store, according to the report. Around there, the thief dropped his blue jacket and the manager stopped chasing him.
A witness saw the theft suspect running fast from the alley north of Reigel’s and then west through the lot, crossing Main Street. She saw him leave the jacket.
Another witness at the north alley, near South Calhoun Street, said she was standing by the ramps between the parking garage and the Rousseau Centre, on the Calhoun Street side, when she saw a man being chased by another man. She saw both go west on the north alley of Riegel’s. She then ran south and stopped at the Rousseau Centre sign.
Two Riegel’s employees and the first witness described the suspect as black, around 5 feet, 9 inches tall, with a
thin build and wearing a knit cap and a dark jacket. One witness said he was 28-30 years old. Another witness said he was about 5 feet, 7 inches tall and in his mid-30s with short hair. He was wearing a blue jacket with white stripes on the sides/sleeves, black pants and shoes, she said.
