I posted it once years ago, but you guys want me to post the official thread listing every pipe shape specifically mentioned by Tolkien in his books? I have a searchable pdf of Hobbit and LOTR and you can search for every instance of the word 'pipe'. There are seven pipes described, including Gandalf's short clay pipe he used in a pipe rings duel with Thorin.

I wouldn't think a clay churchwarden pipe would last long on his journeys.

A Great Waste of $200Not sure why they wouldn't have included a wooden smokeable pipe though. I guess one could always buy one separately.

Gandalf smoked a short, straight clay pipe, not a churchwarden. The only churchwarden described was Bilbo's in An Unexpected Party, when Gandalf first came by.

A churchwarden as travel pipe makes no sense. All I can picture is Strider smoking at the Prancing Pony. I need to watch the film again and see what he has. My guess is a clay tavern pipe or churchwarden. I guess in the realm of high fantasy one is expected to suspend practicality. Unless it was like the days when the tavern provided clay to guests.

...whatever the exposure, many of us can be thankful for Tolkien for sparking the interest in pipe smoking...

Alright, give me a minute and I'll search my pdf and repost the seven pipe shapes described by Tolkien (one of them was Strider's pipe in the Prancing Pony). PS Saying the movies took liberties with the books is like saying WWII was a lover's spat

You can tell I'm not a fan of the movies. I can kinda stomach LOTR (some things they did nail; Frodo, Gandalf, Boromir, maybe Eowyn), but not the hobbit movies. The second one had nothing in it that was in the book. Nothing. Why even call it The Hobbit? Could have been about a biker chick that solves crimes in her spare time.
In the words of Bilbo himself: 'I feel all thin and stretched, like a single novel that's been stretched out over three movies.'
