It looks like the pipe may have had a ferrule... You can buy replacement ferrules/bands at the MM website. It might reinforce the repair.

all too common Steve, but you found the fix. have several shank repaired cobs that have held up for years.

I keep wanting to post pics. I have had several shank splits. Wood Glue and then I take a large softy bit and work it up the shank. In the case of my shire cobbit I put two on the shank, next to each other. Doesn't look bad and it works. Softy bits come in two sizes. The larger ones make the good sleeves. They can either replace the ferrule or slip over it. On a briar shank I used wood glue and gorilla tape. Works well, too
