So, I have been battling some sore tongue issues. I have been smoking for 11+ years so I am not a newbie. I smoked a few too many bowls a couple of weeks ago a little too hard...sometimes happens while drinking a wee bit o' alcohol. The result was a sore, pretty much burnt tongue. I have been experimenting even more with "Sipping" the pipe thinking maybe I wasn't sipping slow and easy enough. After a few relights of a moist flake, it hit me. Duh! The relights. My relights are always a fairly medium strong pull and directly on the middle of my tongue. I am sure I have not made some huge discovery but after some thought I decided to try relights with my teeth closed together so that the smoke hits the teeth first not the tongue. This has really made a difference. If this has been discussed before sorry I didn't see it and if not it's worth a try. Maybe this is an ages old trick and this old dog finally leart it lol.

Steam is my enemy and I always regret smoking a tobacco that's not properly dried ... more relights and more tongue scorching. Plus, the pipe is a wet mess afterwards.

I agree. I always dry wet flakes a minimum or 20 minutes but usually 30 or so.

I've not seen it framed that way, but must be shared by others? You've found a solution that works for you. I over smoke on occasion and will remember this method.

...sounds like you're thinking about it too much... smoking a pipe is going to f*** with your tongue a bit... if it goes beyond discomfort, see your physician...

I'm the same... When I relight I feel the extra heat on my tongue... I must give your idea a try. Thanks for sharing.

From a passion for pipes website. I have always thought of matches as being somewhat of a pain in the arse but I will have to try them again. I have been using a Bic for a couple of days but normally use a butane insert in my zippo which was being used when the issue began. I will give matches a try.

From a passion for pipes website. The Thermodynamics of Pipe Smoking Tuesday, February 17, 2009 ... My little research project has left me both wiser and happier. I am finding that my smoking experience has been enhanced by more careful attention to managing the size and intensity of my pipe’s combustion zone. I am experiencing more complexity in my tobaccos and considerably less tongue bite ... So if I understood Neal correctly, he recommends using wooden matches and only lighting the center of the bowl.
